Do NOT count on these outdated tips while planning your Disney World vacation!
Since its introduction in 2024, Disney World’s Lightning Lane service has allowed guests to bypass standby lines for select attractions through an extra purchase made on the My Disney Experience app. Over the years, there have been some popular tips and strategies for how to get the most out of your Lightning Lane experience. But if you’ve heard either of these two Lightning Lane tips, beware that they DO NOT work anymore!
Disney World’s Lightning Lane services allow guests to skip the standby lines at select attractions and use the shorter Lightning Lanes instead. There are three different options available — Lightning Lane Multi Pass (allows for Lightning Lane selections at multiple select attractions), Lightning Lane Single Pass (one-time Lightning Lane access to an individual, in-demand attraction), and Lightning Lane Premier Pass (one-time entry into EVERY Lightning Lane entry in a given park for one price).
We’ve got a deep dive into everything you need to know about Lightning Lanes if you’re ready to get into alllll of the details about what each of the options includes and how to use them. But for now, the important thing to note is that these two outdated tips no longer work, no matter which of the three Lightning Lane services you may choose to get!
Get a “Free” Lightning Lane for Pirates of the Caribbean
First up, we’ve got a Lightning Lane tip that was so short-lived, it might not have even come up on your radar! In April 2026, Disney World introduced a perk that allowed guests to get a FREE Lightning Lane for Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom.
When it was (briefly) offered, guests could cash in on the free Lightning Lane by participating in Pirate Adventure: Treasure of the Seven Seas, the interactive scavenger hunt in Adventureland. After a guest completed three of the five maps in the scavenger hunt, they could bring them back to the Pirate Adventure desk and redeem them for a free Lightning Lane for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
Way back in the day, there was a similar perk where guests could get a free Pirates of the Caribbean FastPass for completing the activity, but when they went away, the scavenger hunt was only for bragging rights. And we’ve come full circle again! After just three days of offering a free Pirates of the Caribbean Lightning Lane for participating in Pirate Adventure, Disney removed the perk, so the treasure is once again just bragging rights (and the fun you have along the way, of course).
Even though the removal of the free Lightning Lane might be a bummer, there are some silver linings here! First, you can still participate in the Pirate Adventure scavenger hunt if you’re looking for a unique, free activity around Magic Kingdom, you just won’t get the Pirates of the Caribbean Lightning Lane “prize” for it.
Also, Pirates of the Caribbean tends to be in the middle of the pack when it comes to average Magic Kingdom wait times. While lines for some of the most popular rides like TRON Lightcycle/Run, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and Peter Pan’s Flight are often consistently long from park open until close, it’s not uncommon to see the wait for Pirates of the Caribbean dip to 20 minutes or less at various points throughout the day, outside of ultra busy times like the holiday season and Spring Break.
Of course, if you plan to purchase the Lightning Lane Multi Pass service anyway, you could choose to make a Lightning Lane for Pirates of the Caribbean now that the free one is no longer up for grabs.
But if you either aren’t buying Lightning Lane access or you just prefer to prioritize other attractions for your selections, you should still be able to ride Pirates of the Caribbean without too painfully long a line by keeping an eye on the wait times in the My Disney Experience app.
Using Lightning Lanes to Meet More Characters
In the early days of the Lightning Lane service, many of the popular character meet-and-greets around the parks were included as eligible Lightning Lane attractions. Some of the lines to meet the characters can rack up pretty hefty wait times, so this was a big plus for guests who had character interactions at the top of their vacation priority list.
But if you had planned to use Lightning Lane to help you maximize the number of characters you can meet (and minimize the time in line to do so), heads up — last year, Disney World removed the character meet-and-greets from the list of Lightning Lane attractions, so all guests have to wait in standby lines to meet them now.
Of course, things could change in the future, but for now, you’ll only find rides and shows available for your Lightning Lane selections, so if you were banking on using the service primarily for character meet-and-greets, you might be better off using that money elsewhere on your trip.
For character-focused guests, you could redirect that part of your budget towards character dining experiences instead. There are over a dozen character meal locations around Disney World, each of which allows you to meet a select group of characters as they stop by your table throughout the meal. It’s a solid alternative if you’re looking for a way to meet multiple characters without waiting in line!
Just be sure to make an Advance Dining Reservation if you plan to go this route, since character meals can fill up FAST!
Like we always say, things are constantly changing around Disney World! We’ll keep testing all of the popular tips and tricks around Disney World to see which ones do — and DON’T — still work, so stay tuned for all the information you need to plan your next vacation!
