Something BIG is coming to Islands of Adventure at Universal Orlando!
In September, Universal Orlando stated that construction would be coming soon to Islands of Adventure. Director of Public Relations Kristen Smith said in an emailed statement to the Orlando Business Journal that, “In the coming months, there will be construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments.” We’ve already spotted one permit for the demolition of parts of this land, and now, another recently filed permit is pointing to some major changes.
Universal has not yet officially shared any news about what is getting demolished at Islands of Adventure — or what might be coming in its place. Still, we do know that The Eighth Voyage of Sindbad, a stunt show, and Poseidon’s Fury attraction have been closed since 2018 and 2023, respectively. Universal recently filed a new permit that matches the Lost Continent land address. While the description only lists “Specialty Equipment” as the description, it’s the contractor on the work that has piqued our interest.
Intamin Ltd. is listed as the contractor performing the work to be done here, and if you’re a coaster or theme park nerd like we are, that name may sound familiar. Intamin is the same company behind the incredible Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure roller coaster, and the Jurassic World Velocicoaster — two of the most popular rides at Universal Orlando.
Not only that, but while “Specialty Equipment” just sounds like some special machinery or tools for construction, it’s actually language we typically see when a park plans on installing a major ride system — like a new roller coaster or other thrill ride. For now, Universal hasn’t shared any information about what this new permit is for, and we still don’t know what sort of IP will replace the Lost Continent.
The Lost Continent currently has shops and two quick-service restaurants in operation, in addition to the table-service restaurant, Mythos. These are directly in front of the closed stunt show and across from Poseidon’s Fury. It wouldn’t be surprising if we saw some of these, the ones closest to the stunt show’s building, close when the construction walls go up.
As for what could replace this land, long-standing online rumors have surmised (and fans have wished) that a Legend of Zelda-themed land could end up here. Recently, some have speculated that the Legend of Zelda land would eventually come to Epic Universe instead. A Wicked-themed land is another rumor, since NBCUniversal owns that property and has done quite a few pop-up experiences at Universal Orlando already.
One thing is for sure: we’ll be keeping an eye on the permits for the Lost Continent and the rest of Universal Orlando — including Epic Universe. In the meantime, make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest theme park news and more.
