Universal Orlando has changed a LOT over the years, but do you know who actually owns it?
While it might not be as complicated as Disney’s web of acquisitions, Universal Orlando has gone through some ownership shifts since it first opened in 1990. It started as a joint venture, but today, there’s only one company in charge. Let’s break down the history of ownership and who’s calling the shots now!
Universal Orlando’s Early Days
Universal Orlando Resort, which began as Universal Studios Florida, was originally a partnership. When the park first opened in 1990, it was owned by MCA Universal (the predecessor to NBCUniversal) and The Blackstone Group (a private equity firm). And then, Blackstone bought a 50% stake in Universal Orlando in 2000, which helped fund the expansion that turned it into the full-fledged resort it is today.
This partnership was key in transforming Universal Orlando into a true competitor to Disney World, adding Islands of Adventure in 1999 and later CityWalk. But like any good theme park story, there was a plot twist coming.
NBCUniversal Takes Full Control
In early 2011, NBCUniversal made a big move – they acquired Blackstone’s entire 50% stake for approximately $1.025 billion. That meant NBCUniversal became the sole owner of Universal Orlando Resort, giving them full control over decisions, expansions, and future attractions.
Since then, NBCUniversal has poured money into the parks, leading to major expansions like The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Volcano Bay, and the upcoming Epic Universe. Without an external partner like Blackstone, NBCUniversal has had the flexibility to invest heavily in growing the resort into what it is today.
What Does This Mean for Universal Orlando?
Universal Orlando is now 100% owned by NBCUniversal, which itself is a subsidiary of Comcast. So, while you won’t see a Comcast logo at the front gates, they are the ones ultimately funding and overseeing the resort’s growth.
This direct ownership has allowed Universal to aggressively expand and compete with Disney, with new attractions and hotels opening regularly. It also means that Universal Orlando is a critical piece of Comcast’s overall business strategy, making it more than just a theme park – it’s a major player in the entertainment industry.
So, next time you’re riding VelociCoaster or sipping Butterbeer in Hogsmeade, just know that Universal Orlando is entirely under the NBCUniversal umbrella. And with Epic Universe almost open to the public, you can tell they’re not going to be slowing down anytime soon!
