Sure, there are a lot of opportunities to spot animals in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but some of our favorite animals are actually in EPCOT.
If you happen to visit The Seas with Nemo and Friends, you’re sure to have seen the aquarium there that houses a TON of sea life (including some really cute sea urchins). However, you may have noticed that the manatee exhibit was closed for a little while after the manatees that lived there were moved to another facility. Well, the manatee exhibit recently reopened and there are some brand new manatees to visit with.
Meet Cider and Mino, the two new residents at The Seas with Nemo and Friends. Both of these manatees are female: Cider is the bigger of the two — she weighs 770 pounds. She has a wound on her neck that Disney is monitoring, but if she heals up quickly, she’ll be ready to be released back into the wild (that’s what Disney does — they rehab these manatees and return them to their homes).
The smaller manatee is Mino and she only weighs 470 pounds. She is only two years old, and babies are usually with their mothers for three to four years (poor baby Mino). She should weigh around 600 pounds at her age, so Disney is working to get her weight up before she can be released. Excuse me, WE ARE ROOTING FOR YOU, MINO! Anyway, it looks like she and Cider are eating well in the tank!
Disney is also taking care of two male manatees that arrived with the rescue organization that brought Mino, but they are not currently in the on-stage tanks. Maybe we’ll get a peek at them later. Disney’s goal is to rehabilitate these manatees so that they can all go home, so we’re cheering them all on, although we’ll miss them when they’re gone.
