Currently, Walt Disney World is in the middle of several large expansions to its theme parks. From Piston Peak in Magic Kingdom, to Monstropolis coming to Hollywood Studios, and the large Tropical Americas expansion hitting Animal Kingdom, there are lots of big changes coming to Disney World.
And we just got some interesting insight regarding how Disney executives view the current Walt Disney World Park expansions. Let’s dive into everything we know!
At the recent MoffettNathanson’s Media, Internet & Communications Conference, Disney CFO Hugh Johnson spoke in large about the Disney Company and everything happening across theme parks, cruises, media, and more. However, we were particularly interested in his insight on the Walt Disney World park expansions.
He stated that without park expansion, Disney World will not have the ability to grow any more in park attendance. In the presentation, he actually pointed out the following idea: “Now we could jam more people into the park, but then the guest experience declines, and that’s actually bad for the brand. So you don’t want us to do that, and we don’t think it’s a good idea either.”
He outlined that Disney is always keeping guest experience in mind when making these decisions, and while it’s possible they could keep pushing the capacity of the parks without adding new areas, this would just make the park experience bad for everyone involved.
He also outlined that park expansion is beneficial for the Disney company. He stated, “When you put in a big new attraction…you see a surge in demand for it as well. So we tend to fill those things up really, really quickly.” He is essentially outlining that for attendance to grow, they have to add more experiences and areas to the parks.
This also means that pricing will continue to grow in the next few years. He even stated, “We have the ability to grow attendance as we expand capacity. I would expect to see both pricing and attendance growth.”
Overall, this presentation showed that Disney will continue to grow and expand their theme parks in order to both create a better guest experience and increase capacity and profit over the years.
