Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Adventure, recently set sail on its maiden voyage. We were lucky enough to be on that trip, and we had a STELLAR time!
But, unfortunately, it seems as though some folks likely didn’t have as great a time on a recent sailing, as several people reported falling ill after traveling on board the ship. Here’s what you need to know.
Nine people reported falling ill with gastroenteritis symptoms following a recent sailing on the Disney Adventure, The Straits Times has reported. Those who reported illnesses all sailed on the March 16th to 19th voyage aboard the new ship.
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) said that it is investigating the incident, which involved eight passengers and one cruise staff member. It was reported that they developed gastroenteritis symptoms and received medical attention between March 19th and 20th. No one was hospitalized, and those impacted have since recovered.
As of March 27th, the agency shared that those nine cases are the only ones that have been reported on the ship. Gastroenteritis involves stomach and intestinal inflammation, which can be caused by bacteria such as Salmonella or viruses such as norovirus. Norovirus is relatively common on cruise ships, though Disney Cruise Line rarely reports having any outbreaks.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, norovirus is highly contagious and causes vomiting and diarrhea. Some people may also experience a fever, headache, and body aches. It is often called the “stomach flu” or “stomach bug.” Usually, someone infected with norovirus gets better in 1-3 days, but they can still spread the virus for 2 weeks or more after feeling better.
Norovirus spreads through direct contact with someone with norovirus, eating or drinking contaminated food or liquids, or touching contaminated objects or surfaces, and then putting your fingers in your mouth. The most common settings for norovirus outbreaks include: healthcare facilities, restaurants, schools/childcare centers, and cruise ships.
If you’re heading on a cruise soon, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly and frequently. Should you begin to feel sick, let your stateroom attendant know, and consider staying inside your cabin. If your symptoms become severe, head to the medical center on board your cruise ship.
At this time, Disney Cruise Line has not commented on the potential outbreak from this particular sailing.
