Pin trading at Disney World is one of those beloved park traditions that could honestly use a serious glow-up.
For as long as most of us can remember, the experience has been a little… hit or miss, and not always in the fun, unpredictable way. Between questionable pin quality, chaotic online drops, and in-person release days that basically turn into a footrace, there’s a lot of room for improvement. We’ve rounded up a few new rules and changes that Disney Adults are genuinely, desperately hoping Disney World will adopt sooner rather than later.
An Authenticity Board Like Disneyland’s
If you’ve traded pins over at Disneyland recently, you may have noticed something we’re absolutely jealous of here on the East Coast. Disneyland has been rolling out a special display board with a glass top that’s managed by a cast member who’s trained to actually tell the difference between authentic Disney pins and the infamous “scrapper” pins that have flooded trading boards for years.
For anyone who’s spent time trading at Disney World only to realize later that you walked away with a counterfeit, you know exactly how frustrating this is. We’d love to see Disney World adopt this same system across all four parks. Having a knowledgeable cast member and a dedicated board that prioritizes legitimate pins would genuinely restore a lot of trust in the trading experience and make it feel like the special tradition it’s supposed to be.
A Better (and Fairer) System for Online Pin Drops
We have to be real with you: getting a pin from the Disney Store online during one of those online drops feels basically impossible. You can be logged into your account, refreshed and ready to go before the drop even goes live, and still walk away empty-handed every single time. It’s demoralizing in a way that only fellow pin collectors will truly understand.
Disney doesn’t necessarily need to overhaul its entire online shop, but a more accessible and fair system for these drops would go a long way. We will say they recently added a virtual queue system for drops, and it does help. You just need to know when to get online. Set an alarm and be ready to go. Otherwise, you will still miss out on the pins you want.
Numbered Wristbands for Every Park’s Release Days
Here’s one that Disney World could honestly implement tomorrow, and we’d be singing their praises. If you’ve been to EPCOT for one of its Tuesday pin releases, you may have already experienced this: cast members have started handing out numbered wristbands to guests before they even enter the park, which means the release itself isn’t a mad sprint to see who can get to the building first.
It’s such a simple concept, but it makes the whole experience so much more civilized and enjoyable. Nobody wants to feel like they’re in an obstacle course just to have a shot at adding a new pin to their collection. Bringing that numbered wristband system to releases at Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom would make things more equitable for everyone and honestly, just a lot more fun.
Disney World has the opportunity to make pin trading feel like the magical, community-driven experience it was always meant to be. These changes wouldn’t require a massive overhaul, just a little more intention around a tradition that so many of us genuinely love.
