If you’re travelling outside of the U.S., you’ll want to make sure you’re aware of the various travel advisories and warnings that are out there for your destination. Often, these advisories and warnings come from the U.S. Department of State. However, the CDC can also issue warnings due to illness.
Well, the CDC just recently issued a travel advisory for a popular island destination, the Seychelles, due to a virus. So if you’re visiting that location soon, we’re giving you a heads up.
The new travel advisory appears on the CDC website due to an outbreak of chikungunya, a virus transmitted by mosquitoes. Travelers are warned to take certain precautions when visiting The Seychelles to lower their risk of infection. This includes protecting yourself from mosquito bites with insect repellent, long-sleeved shirts and pants, and staying in places with air conditioning or that have screens on windows and doors. The CDC also recommends vaccination for travelers who are visiting an area with a chikungunya outbreak.
Symptoms of chikungunya usually begin about 3-7 days after a bite by an infected mosquito. Symptoms include fever and joint pain, as well as headaches, muscle pain, swollen joints, and rash. Most infected people recover within a week, but some will continue to have severe joint pain for months and years later. So it’s obviously something you’ll want to try to avoid contracting.
The CDC also recommends that pregnant women reconsider visiting the islands, as mothers can pass the virus to their newborns.
We’ll keep an eye out for more travel-related news, advisories, and warnings, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
