Don’t let this cruise planning mistake cost you money!
There are a lot of details that go into planning a vacation, from finding the best travel dates to booking flights. With so many logistics to juggle, it can be tempting to pay for everything up front — after all, that’s one less thing you have to remember, right? But if you’re planning a cruise vacation, you could be leaving some serious money on the table by paying in full right away!
In many cases, when booking a cruise, passengers only need to pay a deposit to secure their booking, with the full payment due closer to the sailing date. Payment policies can vary by cruise line, length of cruise, and stateroom category. But, for reference, on Disney Cruise Line, full payment for non-concierge rooms is typically due 90 days before the sail date for cruises 5 nights or less, and 120 days before the sail date for cruises 6 nights or longer.
It might be tempting to pay off your cruise as soon as you have the money saved up, but there’s an important reason why it could be better for your budget to wait until your final payment date to pay in full. As with other travel categories, cruise prices can fluctuate over time. And if a lower fare pops up after you’ve already booked, you may be able to get your rate adjusted down — but it becomes far more complicated if you’ve already paid in full!
Again, policies can vary by cruise line, but on Disney Cruise Line, if a lower fare appears before your paid-in-full date, you can call Disney Cruise Line to cancel and rebook at the better rate.
BUT, if you’ve already paid in full, the process gets much more complicated! Canceling after you’ve already paid in full could result in penalties, depending on how close it is to the sail date. In these cases, the fees for canceling and rebooking could outweigh any potential savings. By holding off on making your final payment until it’s due, you can keep your options open for taking advantage of savings if lower rates appear.
