Lookout Cay is FINALLY here.
After years of construction and preparation, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point — the latest exclusive destination for Disney Cruise Line passengers — is finally ready for the public. Located on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, the new destination “represents the natural beauty and rich culture of the Bahamas, brought to life through Disney storytelling and the unparalleled service of local cast and crew.” Now, Disney has released a few more important details about the destination!
Recently, Joey Gaskins Jr. – the Regional Affairs Director of The Bahamas and the Caribbean – broke down some of the natural wonders of Eleuthera that you can expect to see on your upcoming Disney Cruise!
Pink Sand Beaches
According to Gaskins, one of the major natural wonders of Eleuthera — and Lighthouse Point — in particular are the island’s PINK sand beaches. The natural hue comes from “crushed coral and fragments of shells that mix with the island’s soft, white sand.”
Pineapple Power
Gaskins goes on to discuss the importance of pineapples to the island. As the expert explains, the island has a long history of pineapple farming and is one of the only islands in the Bahamas to sustain pineapples. In fact, each year the island hosts a whole Pineapple Festival! If you’re a big pineapple fan, you may want to try to plan your visit to match up with the festival in future years if possible. (It’s a bit too late for 2024, as this year’s edition of the event takes place from June 7th to 8th, days after Lighthouse Point at Lookout Cay officially opens.
Natural Wonders
One of the best-known natural phenomena on the island is the massive Ocean Hole, a naturally forming blue hole, near the Rock Sound area of Eleuthera. As Gaskins explains, “Many Rock Sound residents learned how to swim in this beautiful hole, which has a higher salt content that makes it more buoyant than seawater.”
Not too far from the Ocean Hole is Cathedral Cave, a massive natural rock structure that features “soaring, wide ceilings, cascading tree roots and glittering filtered sunlight.” Both the Cathedral Cave and the Ocean Hole are available to visit and offered as part of the port adventures offered to you as a Disney Cruise Line passenger.
The Glass Window Bridge
Arguably Eleuthera’s most famous natural landmark, the Glass Window Bridge is a 30 ft. wide strip of rock that sits between the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Bight of Eleuthera and Exuma Sound on the other, creating a glorious juxtaposition between the two bodies of water and their distinct colors. Not only can you visit the Glass Window Bridge on your Disney Cruise, you can also see artwork of this gorgeous natural wonder – – painted by Eleutheran artist Kevin Cooper – – on display in the Lookout Point cabanas, as well as being available for purchase.
These are just some of the wonders of Eleuthera that will be available to you on a Disney Cruise that includes a stop at Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Stay tuned to DFB for further coverage of this new addition to the Disney Cruise Line.
