A collision at one of the nation’s busiest airports is being investigated by the National Transportation Safety Board, according to The New York Times.
On Wednesday, October 1st, two Delta Airlines jets collided at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The “low-speed” collision, which occurred on one of the airport’s taxiways, saw the wing of one aircraft slam into the other’s cockpit window, sending one person to the hospital. According to the airline, the two CRJ-900 regional jets involved were being operated by regional carrier Endeavor Air at the time.
The collision happened at the intersection of the airport’s taxiways M and A, as the wing of flight 5155 — which was preparing to depart for Roanoke, Virginia — crashed into Flight 5047, which had just arrived from Charlotte, North Carolina. The flight from Charlotte had 57 passengers onboard, while the flight to Roanoke had 28 passengers.
Passenger Nate Cicero, who was on the Roanoke flight, told New York’s WABC affiliate, “Our pilot slammed on the brakes, but unfortunately, we t-boned the other plane. Once you looked up out the window and saw, saw the other plane there, we were going right towards them. It was an inevitable crash.”
According to NTSB spokesperson Eric Weiss, an investigative team from the agency had been dispatched to the airport, and flight recorders from both planes had been recovered and taken to the agency’s headquarters for analysis. Generally, the NTSB releases a preliminary accident report within 30 days, and a full report including probable cause, in 12 to 18 months.
Delta said in a statement that they intend to “work with all relevant authorities to review what occurred as safety of our customers and people comes before all else. We apologize to our customers for the experience.”
A shocking collision between two taxiing planes at New York’s LaGuardia Airport is now being investigated by the NTSB. Stay tuned to DFB for any updates on this incident.
