Disney trips are full of endless possibilities…including moments we’d rather forget.
Disney Adults have seen it all — the good AND the bad. While a trip to the Disney Parks is packed with magic, it can also feature some awkward and uncomfortable moments, as well. Unfortunately, you can have some pretty good intentions or follow typically sound advice and still wind up in a tough situation.
From personal experience to chatting with other Disney Adults, we’ve come up with at least 3 times we made plans at the Disney Parks, only to have them blow up in our faces in truly awkward fashion.
While the Disney Parks are moving away from the virtual queue system, it still exists in a limited capacity. Back when Disneyland’s Rise of the Resistance attraction used it, one of our team members was burned by it, despite using it as intended.
When our team member visited the resort back in 2021 for their honeymoon, they were having dinner at Carthay Circle — one of the best and most prestigious restaurants at Disney California Adventure and all of the Disneyland Resort — when it was time for their Rise of the Resistance virtual queue. In order to make the window, they skipped dessert and hustled over to Disneyland. They got on the Disneyland Railroad and made it in time for their reservation. HOWEVER, they were met with the unfortunate news that the ride had gone down two minutes earlier.
OOF. They did everything they were supposed to and sacrificed a delicious dessert in the process — and it was all for naught.
Another time a decision backfired — and this one happens ALL THE TIME — is rope-dropping without considering the consequences.
To rope drop, you’ll arrive at a park early and then enter each land slowly — a rope literally keeps you back and lifts when it’s time to move forward. This process lets you be one of the first guests of the day to experience a ride. By most accounts, this is a great way to avoid the long lines that form later in the day. But it comes with sacrifices.
For starters, you’re up EARLY and starting your day with some serious activity. You have to make your way to the park of your choice, then battle crowds who are just as eager as you to avoid the long lines. It can be a madhouse and require a ton of energy well before noon.
And that’s the thing — you can run out of energy too fast. Maybe you wanted to see the fireworks later at night or do dinner in the park. That all becomes incredibly difficult when you find yourself crashing out way before you anticipated. We’ve had experiences where we started our day so early and spent so much energy at rope drop that we found ourselves ready to tap out around lunch.
You may feel like rope dropping a park is smart, but if you aren’t prepared to catch a second wind, you might want to reconsider.
Another moment where doing something logical backfired that might actually be an awkward blessing is needlessly buying Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
Lightning Lane Multi Pass allows you to bypass the standby lines in favor of a usually faster line — for an added fee. This paid service is almost always worth it, as it will surely allow you to spend more of your day riding attractions instead of waiting in queues.
However, there have been rare occasions where we’ve bought Lightning Lane Multi Pass and not used it enough to justify the cost.
Sometimes the parks just aren’t that crowded, or rides that use Lightning Lanes aren’t up and running. Either way, Lightning Lanes become a bit useless, and you won’t really have a good bead on the situation unless you bought the Pass day-of — which isn’t recommended since you can buy them and make ride reservations in advance. If you wait, you may miss out.
When a wait time is in the 5 to 10 minute range, Lightning Lanes definitely aren’t a necessity. However, it’s worth noting that you can still use your Lightning Lane Multi Pass and ride an attraction with a short wait. In fact, it’s a great way to ride multiple times throughout a day!
This ticket add-on won’t break the bank, but the cost adds up if you’re paying for multiple people. When you hardly use it but you’ve bought several, the reality is less awkward and more frustrating.
