There aren’t many security rules you can opt out of, but did you know there’s one that’s optional?
Many airports have updated their TSA security processes to include biometric technology and facial scans as part of the ID verification process. Although the data is instantly deleted, you have the option to bypass this step.
When we were going through security at the Orlando International Airport (MCO), we saw a sign that said you can opt out of facial recognition technology. It also said if you chose not to use the technology, you won’t lose your place in line (and on busy days in MCO, we appreciate that!).
All you have to do is notify the TSA agent when you get through the line. If you choose to opt out, they’ll identify you with your standard ID.
During the facial recognition, a photo of your face is taken and compared to the photo on the ID to ensure they are the same. It’s more efficient for busy airports, but the images are not shared in any databases and are instantly deleted.
This is similar to the fingerprint scans at Disney World. Your fingerprints are not stored in any databases, but instead, a number is assigned to them. When you rescan in, it ensures the same number is used. This process is also optional, and if you choose to opt out, they’ll use a system to scan you in.
TSA says that the new biometric technology is to improve “accuracy and speed of identity verification.”
