There have been quite a few changes over the years in how Disney handles hotel security, and it’s definitely something guests should know before checking in.
No, there’s no one hiding in the closet or installing secret spy cameras in your bathroom. But yes, there is someone who might enter your room even if you hang up the sign that says otherwise. Let’s talk about room snoopers — and whether or not you should actually be concerned.
Disney Changed Its Door Hangers — and That’s a Bigger Deal Than You’d Think
You might remember the old “Do Not Disturb” signs that used to hang from the knobs at Disney resort hotels. Those are long gone. Now, you’ll find signs that say “Room Occupied” instead. It’s a subtle wording shift, but it changes how things work in a big way.
In the past, if you put up that “Do Not Disturb” sign, housekeeping would skip your room completely. No knock. No entry. Now, the “Room Occupied” sign lets Disney know someone’s inside and would prefer privacy, but it doesn’t guarantee it. In fact, a Cast Member is required to enter your room at least once every 24 hours, even if you turn down housekeeping altogether.
Wait — Why Is Disney Doing This?
This all goes back to a security policy change made a few years ago. After a tragic incident at a Las Vegas hotel where a “Do Not Disturb” room was left unchecked for days, hotel companies across the country — including Disney — updated their policies to require wellness or security checks in each room at least once per day.
So now, whether you’re staying at Pop Century or Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, a Cast Member will stop by and make sure everything looks safe. It doesn’t necessarily mean someone will barge in without warning. Most of the time, they’ll knock and announce themselves. But if no one answers, or if there’s any reason for concern, they’re allowed to come in.
So Who’s Actually Entering the Rooms?
Usually, it’s Housekeeping. But if you’ve declined Mousekeeping services for the day (yes, that’s really what they call it), it could be a specially trained Cast Member just doing a quick room check. They’re not there to dig through your stuff or creep around. It’s more of a visual sweep — just making sure nothing seems off.
These visits are quick, and in most cases, completely unremarkable. But for some guests, especially those who value privacy or are traveling with sensitive items, it can feel a little invasive.
What About the “Hey Disney” Device in the Room?
We’ve heard this one a lot — people are already a little on edge about the new “Hey Disney” smart assistant that’s been installed in many resort hotel rooms. Yes, it works like an Alexa, and yes, it’s always listening for its wake word — but not for everything you say.
If that still makes you uncomfortable, the good news is that it’s totally optional. You can unplug it, and Disney won’t be offended. No one’s taking notes on how many times you ask for towel refills or park hours.
Should You Be Worried?
Worried? Not exactly. But aware? Absolutely. This is one of those Disney World trip details that rarely gets mentioned in travel blogs or planning guides, but it’s important to know what to expect. You should feel safe in your room, but you should also understand that total privacy isn’t guaranteed, even with that door hanger in place.
If you’re not comfortable with someone entering your room while you’re not there, you can talk to the front desk and ask for a heads-up when room checks are happening. Some guests have had luck requesting a specific time for the daily check (though it’s not guaranteed). And if you’re inside the room when the Cast Member comes by, you can simply let them do a quick visual check while you’re present.
The Bottom Line
Disney’s not snooping just for fun, and there’s no Big Brother-style surveillance going on. This is all about safety — yours and everyone else’s. But that doesn’t mean it’s not a little jarring if you don’t know about it ahead of time. So if you’re planning your next Disney World stay and expecting a locked-door, total-privacy experience… maybe adjust your expectations a bit.

I am glad that this is done, and if you know the tragic things that hotels and families have had to deal with, you understand why. I don’t mind at all as long as they 1) knock, and 2) don’t actually clean the room if the ‘Off to Neverland’ sign is on. We do our best to always leave a gratuity for housekeeping each day that we leave the room open to cleaning. But sometimes it doesn’t work out for us to have cash on a given day, or we don’t want Mousekeeping for whatever reason (e.g. when I lost a very small earring and needed more time to look for it). We like to tip by day rather than the end of the stay because it could be different people cleaning the room on different days. Plus the service is amazing when you leave a nice tip every day your room is cleaned 😊Luckily, we’ve never had someone just walk in, but I’m starting to worry.
I Stayed at Old Key West last month and they did come in every day. I was never there when they entered, the only reason I knew was that my trash was emptied daily. I stay on points which meant during my 5 night stay I should have gotten 1 trash and towel day. I got 1 towel day and 5 trash days!
Great topic! Our last trip included a stay at the Beach Club. First time there in over 70 stays at WDW. While we realize we have no right to total privacy at any location and are aware of the change since the terrible Las Vegas shooting, we were totally creeped out by the invasiveness of Beach Club staff entering our room if we were there or not there. In fact, on one occasion there was a knock on the door for a room inspection and we willingly allowed it (although we were napping) and within an hour there was another request for a room inspection with no knock. (Sign on the door. We explained the previous inspection. They didn’t seem to believe us.)
We are two women in our 70’s and don’t pose a lot of danger except for our scooter driving ability occasionally.
We knew someone had been in the room frequently as objects were moved, perhaps one trash can emptied (not all). Just little things that aren’t quite right.
We never did get an explanation as to why this happened but, frankly, it added to the reasons we dropped our AP’s and have no trips planned at this time.
But we sure do love the Disney Food Blog! Wonderful!
Why don’t the just go back to the way it was. Do the room every day. Now, I wonder if the water savings was worth the damage done to people’s lives.
