Disney’s collection of streaming services — including Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ – – have combined to reach over 157 million ad-supported users globally.
Rita Ferro, the company’s President of Global Advertising, shared the numbers at the 5th annual Tech and Data Showcase at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). According to Ferro, over the past 6 months, the company’s streamers have reached 157 million ad-supported monthly active users globally, including 112 million domestically in the United States.
According to Disney, “the ad-supported MAU numbers are derived from active accounts across Disney’s streaming ecosystem (Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+)* who have viewed ad-supported content continuously for more than 10 seconds.” From there, each active account is multiplied by the number of estimated users per account (the global average is 2.6, though “it varies by application and region” according to the company) to roughly estimate the total number of users.
While revealing the numbers, Ferro said, “Disney sits at the intersection of world-class sports and entertainment content, with the most high-value audiences in ad-supported global streaming at scale. We wanted to be the first to offer our industry greater transparency into the methodology used to estimate our engaged global ad-supported monthly active users.”
The massive numbers announcement comes at a pivotal time during the evolution of streaming. Many service providers — including Disney — have started offering new tiers of plans as well as joining together in bundles in an attempt to raise subscriber numbers and increase profitability.
Disney recently used the Tech and Data Showcase at CES to announce that they’re steaming services have reached over 157 million ad-supported users globally. Stay tuned to DFB for further updates on Disney’s streaming business.
