Got a little one at home who simply must have the latest Disney princess dolls? Or maybe you’re a Disney toy collector who is always on the hunt for the newest items?
There are LOTS of Disney toys out there to buy, play with, and collect. But some of your favorite Disney toys might look a little different in the future — here’s why!
According to CNBC, Mattel recently “won the license” to make Disney toys based on the princesses, which includes those from the Frozen movies. Mattel lost that license to Hasbro back in 2016, but now they’ve got it back and the change is already proving to be big for the company. CNBC notes that Mattel shares jumped on Wednesday following the toy news.
Mattel already has existing licensing deals with Disney and Pixar when it comes to things like Toy Story, Cars, and Lightyear too, so this agreement regarding the princesses and Frozen expands on that arrangement.
According to a press release from Mattel, under this deal, “Mattel will develop dolls based on Disney Princess including Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Brave, Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, Mulan, Pocahontas, The Princess and the Frog, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Tangled, Disney Frozen, The Little Mermaid Live Action, Moana D+ Series, Tiana D+ Series, Aladdin Live Action, Beauty & the Beast Live Action, Cinderella Live Action, and Mulan Live Action.”
When will we start seeing new Disney princess and Frozen toys from Mattel? Well, it looks like it’ll still be a while. According to CNBC, Mattel will start selling new Disney toys in 2023. The business will actually be managed by the same group that oversees the Barbie merchandise.
But things aren’t over for Hasbro and Disney just yet. Hasbro has shared that they have extended their relationship with Lucasfilm and renewed their “long-standing licensing deal for the ‘Star Wars’ franchise.”
Hasbro has also struck a new deal with Lucasfilm which will allow it to make products based on the Indiana Jones films. The last time Hasbro worked on toys for Indiana Jones was back in 2008. So far they’ve indicated that the Indiana Jones-themed items will go on sale in the United States in 2023, which lines up with the release of the new Indiana Jones movie.
According to a press release from Hasbro, Stephanie Young, President of Disney Consumer Products, Games and Publishing has said, “We’re thrilled to continue collaborating with this iconic company—one that will help lift our consumer experiences across the Marvel, Star Wars and now Indiana Jones franchises to new heights for years to come.”
So at some point in the future you might notice that those new Disney dolls and toys look a little different, or you might start seeing some brand new items available in the stores thanks to these arrangements!
