Airport security is evolving yet again.
Getting through airport security is one of the least fun parts of air travel. Often, you’re forced to deal with long lines, crowded terminals, and navigation confusion that can make getting through the checkpoint a real pain. However, over the past couple of years, we’ve seen the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) change protocol significantly and even test brand-new options, like this NEW offering on the East Coast of the United States.
On June 1st, TSA officially launched a first-of-its-kind remote screening pilot program at Boston Logan International Airport. This new initiative is designed to give travelers an alternative to heading directly to the airport for check-in and security screening.
Eligible passengers flying on select JetBlue and Delta flights departing Boston Logan between 5:30 AM and 4 PM can complete the entire security process at a remote location in Framingham, Massachusetts, before boarding a shuttle that’ll take them directly to their terminal.
These passengers can drive to the Framingham remote screening facility (30 to 45 minutes from Logan International), check in for their flight, complete the security screening, and then take the shuttle to their Boston terminal.
Ideally, the purpose of this service is to bypass terminal traffic, crowded checkpoints, and the need for airport parking. In a statement, TSA Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill said, “This pilot program is all about creating options for our travelers.”
Tickets for the Framingham remote screening experience are on sale at massport.com for $9, and children under 18 can board the bus for free when traveling with a ticketed adult. Parking at the Framingham location costs $7 per day — which is significantly cheaper than parking at the airport in Boston.
Other remote screening locations can be found at Los Angeles, Atlanta, and JFK (New York) International Airports. It’s likely the TSA will try to expand these services to more airports in the near future. If you’re flying through Boston Logan and meet the eligibility requirements, this may be one airport shortcut worth trying.
In the meantime, we’ll continue keeping an eye on all the TSA security and air travel changes happening this year and beyond, so make sure you keep it posted right here at DFB for all the latest updates!
