Well, we’re here again…hurricane season has officially arrived in Disney World. Hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th, so if you’re visiting Disney World during that time, you’ll have to keep that in mind because a hurricane could impact your trip.
This year’s potential tropical storms and hurricanes have already been named, but what can you expect from hurricane season in 2026? Well, we’re going to tell you!
We’ll start with the good news. This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has predicted that this year’s hurricane season will be quieter than usual. The NOAA’s hurricane outlook for 2026 predicts just a 35% chance of a near-normal season, a 10% chance of an above-normal season, and a 55% chance of a below-normal season.
The agency has forecast a total of 8-14 named storms, which would be storms with winds of 39 mph or higher. Only 3-6 of those storms are predicted to become hurricanes with winds of 74 mph or higher. This includes 1-3 major hurricanes at Cat 3 or higher with winds of 111 mph or higher. An average season generally has 14 named storms with seven hurricanes, including three major hurricanes.
So what does that mean for Disney World? Well, it means the odds of a major hurricane pushing through the Orlando area are lower than normal. That doesn’t mean Orlando won’t see a major hurricane blowing through, so you’ll still want to be prepared and know Disney World’s hurricane cancellation policy, just in case.
You’ll also need to be prepared for heavy downpours. Even if a storm doesn’t become a hurricane or loses its intensity by the time it comes to shore in Florida, you could still have to deal with a lot of rain when visiting the parks. This kind of weather can also close some rides. So always pack rain gear and keep an eye on the weather forecast (and the AccuWeather app now has the perfect way for you to do that).
Know that Disney World will also be keeping a close eye on the weather, and if you’re visiting the parks and the weather will be impacting things, Disney will do its best to communicate that. For example, the My Disney Experience app will note ride closures. If the hurricane or tropical storm is intense enough, you may be notified that the parks will close until the storm blows over. Disney World hotels are also equipped to handle guests stuck there during hurricanes, and you’ll be given access to food and beverages, as well as special hotel activities.
So if you have a trip planned during the 2026 hurricane season, be weather aware, know Disney’s cancellation policy, and pay attention to Cast Members if you get caught in a hurricane while staying at a Disney World hotel. Disney knows what it’s doing and wants to keep you safe.
