Flying has many specific rules, and some of them you won’t know until you’re there at the airport or on the flight, especially if you haven’t flown in a while, or it’s new to you.
Don’t worry, that’s why we’re here! We fly and travel ALL the time, and even when we’re not, we keep up with all the latest news so you can feel up-to-date and prepared before your trip begins. One of the essentials we say are VERY important for your Disney World trips are none other than portable chargers, because trust us, your phone WILL die in the parks otherwise. However, when you’re flying with it, there’s a rule you CANNOT break!
According to Forbes, now MORE airlines have banned having portable chargers and other lithium batteries in checked bags, and those in carry-on bags have to be under strict rules, all due to a jump in fires on planes. Yes, these batteries HAVE caused fires on multiple planes — at least three so far this year, to be precise.
American Airlines is the latest to adjust its rules, now meaning that all four of the “big” U.S. airlines have rules around portable chargers on their flights. Now, American Airlines passengers can only have two lithium batteries or portable chargers in their carry-on luggage. If one is in use, it has to be in plain view, while ones that are fully turned off can remain in carry-on bags.
Southwest Airlines has taken things a step further, and they were the first to implement a rule about portable chargers. Currently, passengers can only bring one portable charger on board, and it CANNOT be in an overhead bin. Instead, it has to be in plain sight at all times. United Airlines has also started a similar process as of March 1st, asking passengers to keep any portable chargers out of the overhead bins and in sight. Delta Airlines also limits passengers to two portable chargers and states that they must be easily accessible, instead of in an overhead bin.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has reported 28 lithium battery-related fire incidents on board planes so far this year, which averages 1.9 incidents a week. Since the FAA began tracking these incidents in 2006, there have been a total of 717 incidents, with nearly four in ten incidents involving portable battery packs.
If you’re heading to Disney World or Disneyland, you likely have at least one of these in your bag, so we highly recommend looking into the rules for your specific airline before flying. The last thing you want is to be told you can’t bring one with you, and then you have to put that money down the drain.
