Disney is updating some of their most popular films! Starting this month, several films are receiving updates to the animation in songs.

These new animation sequences will have the characters using Sign Language throughout the songs in celebration of National Deaf History Month. Before you ask, Disney has also confirmed that these scenes were not created using AI. We have all of the details right here.
Disney Animation’s new Songs in Sign Language series is kicking off very soon! On April 27th, Disney+ will release three new animated musical sequences that have been “newly reimagined and animated in American Sign Language (ASL).”

These three updated scenes are in Frozen 2, Encanto, and Moana 2. The songs that have the new sequences are “The Night Right Thing”, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” and “Beyond.” They were all directed by Disney animator and director Hyrum Osmond, who worked with artistic director DJ Kurs and his team at Los Angeles’ Tony Award-winning Deaf West Theatre.

Disney confirmed that more than 20 animators worked on the updated scenes, and they used sign language references created specifically for this project. They also worked alongside eight performers from the Deaf West Theatre to focus on “concepts and emotion instead of a word-for-word transcription.”

Osmond shared, “In the majority of cases, we created entirely new animation. There were a lot of adjustments that we had to do within the animation to be true to the original intention.” He continued to share that this is an amazing way to show “one of the most beautiful ways of communication on Earth.” He also touched on his own experiences growing up with a father who is deaf, saying, “Growing up, I never learned sign language, and that barrier prevented me from really connecting with my dad. This reimagining of Disney Animation musical numbers helps bring down barriers and allows us to connect in a special way with our audiences in the Deaf community.”

Not only has Disney reanimated these popular songs, but they are also sharing a special behind-the-scenes featurette that will accompany the scenes. It’s going to show viewers the process of the collaboration in creating the songs. This seems to be another way the company is working hard to show that they used animators rather than AI. You can see one of the reanimated scenes here.
