We’re constantly on the lookout for new snacks in Disney World.
One of the best places to find unique treats is in the World Showcase at EPCOT. Not only do the snack stands here have some delightful options, but we’ve often found fun snacks in the gift shops. And when it comes down to it, there’s really no better place to shop for eats than the Mitsukoshi Department Store in the Japan Pavilion.
Recently, Mitsukoshi Department Store added four Japanese-style flavored buns and breads in the prepackaged snacks section, and you know we had to try them out! Let’s dive into the review.
Starting out our list, we have the White Peach Paste Bun for $4.49. This looked kind of like an uncut hamburger bun when out of the package, and it was thinner than the other three treats we tried.
This is the only one of the four that’s filled. The peach paste inside is similar in texture to a jelly — it’s smooth, slightly glossy, and a little artificial-tasting. If you’re a fan of fake peach flavor, you certainly won’t mind this.
The other three are all flavored versions of Baked Wheat Cakes. First was the Blueberry Filled Baked Wheat Cake for $3.49. This was our favorite of the three, with a clear blueberry flavor.
The bread itself was rather sweet, but the blueberry stands out against it so that you can actually detect the fruitiness.
Next, we had the Strawberry Filled Baked Wheat Cake for $3.49. This was pillowy and a little bit chewy, but easy to eat.
We’d call this a step down from the blueberry in terms of flavor strength, but there’s still a hint of strawberry that comes through. The ratio of fruit flavor to bread is not very high, so you’re mostly getting the sweet cake flavor with a hint of fruit.
Finally, there’s the Chocolate Filled Baked Wheat Cake, also for $3.49. This had kind of a zebra vibe going on with the black stripes on the white cake, and it created a fun effect when cut in half.
Like the others, it was fluffy and had a bit of a chew, but this was the least flavored of the bunch. The chocolate scent came through nicely, but then it disappeared on the taste buds. A bit disappointing, honestly.
These were actually quite fun to eat and to try all the flavors! The blueberry bun was our favorite of the bunch, but since these are such an affordable snack, you might want to try them all as well.
