Who else is SO excited to step into the world of Monstropolis soon?? While we anxiously await its opening, we’re taking a closer look at everything we know about the new Monsters, Inc. land so far!
In August 2024, Disney officially announced that a new Monsters, Inc.-themed land was coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Since then, we’ve learned more about Disney’s plans for Monstropolis and seen construction start to take shape. We can’t wait to finally step into the monster world ourselves, so let’s take a closer look at what’s happening with the development of the brand-new Monsters, Inc. land!
Where Is Monstropolis?
The Monsters, Inc. themed land will be taking over the Grand Avenue south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, which was the former location of Muppets Courtyard. Last year, Muppets Courtyard began to close in phases, and the final two areas, PizzeRizzo and Muppet*Vision 3D, closed in June 2025, making way for the Monsters, Inc. construction to begin.
But, if you’re still mourning the loss of the Muppets, there is a silver lining — Disney is currently working on retheming Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and a new version starring the Muppets will open in the summer of 2026!
And, as bummed as we were to see Muppets Courtyard go, we have to admit that the details Disney has shared about Monstropolis have definitely got us excited enough to soften the blow!
What’s Coming to Monstropolis?
The story of Monsters, Inc. land will pick up where the 2001 movie left off. Disney has shared that, “you’ll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters” and even visit the Laugh Factory!
One of the MAJOR highlights we’re looking forward to is the brand new Monsters, Inc. roller coaster, which will be Disney’s VERY FIRST suspended coaster! In describing the new coaster, Disney said, “You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door!”
We even got a first look at the Imagineering model for the upcoming coaster at the D23 event, where the announcement was made, which had us IMMEDIATELY daydreaming about how cool this ride will be.
Since then, Imagineering has shared more glimpses at how the coaster will work, including a lifting mechanism that helps eliminate the need for a vertical hill, making it different from other coasters.
In addition to the new coaster, the land will also feature a new Monsters, Inc. theater show. Disney hasn’t yet revealed the storyline of the show or confirmed its location, but the concept art shows Muppet*Vision 3D Theater reimagined into “The Glob” theater — a play on the famous Globe Theatre.
And, while Disney hasn’t officially confirmed it yet, we spotted something else in the concept art that we REALLY hope is in the works! When zooming in, you can see the iconic eyeball sculpture that is in front of Harryhausen’s in the Monsters, Inc. movie. Harryhausen’s is the Japanese restaurant that Mike Wazowski takes Celia Mae out to for her birthday in the movie, and we SO hope that we’ll get the chance to dine there ourselves!
Again, Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that this restaurant will be coming to the new Monsters, Inc. Land, but the fact that it is in the concept art hints at the likely addition of Harryhausen’s in this new area.

Construction Progress
Since construction on the Monsters, Inc. land began last year, we’ve been keeping an eye on the progress both from the park and via aerial photos shared by bioreconstruct on X.
We’ve seen lots of work being done on the roller coaster. The coaster will be expanding into an area that was previously a Cast Member parking lot, and the shape of the building is starting to appear.
A closer look reveals just how BIG the footprint for the roller coaster building is!
We’ve also seen construction happening elsewhere, including in what used to be Gonzo’s Royal Flush, the bathroom next to PizzeRizzo…
…and on the former Italian restaurant, Mama Melrose’s. From what we can see, this work appears to be a retheming of the buildings and surrounding areas.
Plus, crews are also working on the former MuppetVision theater, which, as we mentioned earlier, is named “The Glob” in the concept art and seems to be the likely spot for the new Monsters, Inc. theater show.
Seeing the construction progress has been getting us more and more thrilled to experience everything the monster world has to offer!
Disney hasn’t announced an opening date for Monstropolis yet, but we’ll be keeping a close eye out for any updates and major construction milestones, and we’ll update you as soon as we learn more!
