UPDATED June 4, 2026
Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World is preparing to open a BRAND NEW THEMED LAND featuring those lovable monsters from MONSTERS, INC.! It’s time for us humans to visit Monstropolis. That’s right… the monsters are inviting YOU to Monstropolis, where they need human laughter to power the city and keep it running.
In August 2024, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro made the official announcement as he shared, “The first time I saw Monsters, Inc., all I wanted to do was ride on one of those doors like Mike and Sulley. You’ll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. Remember in the movie how those claws grab the doors and hoist them up into the air to take them away? We’re doing that, too. And you’re going along for the ride.”
The story of the land will pick up after the events of the popular Pixar film, and humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. Disney shares that here, “you’ll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters” and even visit the Laugh Factory!
The Story Behind Monstropolis
In June 2026, Disney revealed the backstory of the land: “Monstropolis — the monster city now powered by laughter — is getting ready to give humans a glimpse of what’s been hidden from their world for generations. Which raises an interesting question: if humans were never meant to enter the monster world … why are the doors finally opening to us?”
Turns out, the answer is in the Monstropolis paper, the Monstropolis Horn! Get ready to celebrate H.U.M.A.N. Day, or “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice” Day!
After Mike and Sulley discovered that laughter powers better than screams, a city-wide shift began in Monstropolis. The way monsters viewed humans changed, and now, the Department of Human Relations has been formed to improve the relationship between the two groups.
The newly-established department is doing something that monsters originally never thought possible — inviting humans into the monster world for the first time. H.U.M.A.N. Day is about celebrating and sharing culture!
“Human guests will have the chance to explore the city, meet its citizens, taste unique cuisine, and step into the everyday world of monsters in a totally new way. For the first time, two worlds once separated are meeting face to scaly, furry, and fang-filled face – brought together not by screams, but by laughter.”
Monstropolis is aiming to be the next human vacation destination! Disney says, “Storefronts line the streets, industries hum alongside everyday life, and every corner reflects the quirky, character-filled world fans fell in love with. And of course, it wouldn’t be Monstropolis without a few iconic stops along the way. Places like Harryhausen’s — yes, THAT legendary restaurant monsters line up for — and the Glob Theater help bring the city to life, adding even more personality, energy, and can’t-miss moments around every corner.”

Monsters, Inc. Land Roller Coaster
“You’ll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door!” Oh, did I mention that this statement is in reference to a brand new Monsters, Inc. roller coaster?

Monsters, Inc. Land will feature Disney’s VERY FIRST suspended coaster, which “will put you right in the middle of the monster action. Just be sure to fill out your paperwork! Roz is always watching…” (A suspended roller-coaster is one where you sit in your seat while your legs dangle off the ground. The seat is attached to the track above your head instead of under your seat.)
We had the chance to check out a first look at all the Imagineering model for the upcoming coaster at the D23 event where the ride announcement was made.
The intricate model truly is reminiscent of the door scenes from Monsters, Inc.
And in March 2025, Disney shared a new video with some AMAZING renderings of the upcoming coaster.
Walt Disney Imagineering shares a new look at the Monsters, Inc. coaster loading area and first-ever vertical lift that will hoist riders in the air like never before as they zoom into the door vault! https://t.co/9Rwf0YtRGX 🚪🎢 #SXSW pic.twitter.com/fnTaDIA6AR

In the video, you can see the coaster being LIFTED off the ground! We have NEVER seen anything quite like this before. It’s the world’s first!
This helps eliminate the need for a vertical hill in the coaster, making it different from other coasters.
In June 2025, a map release confirmed that the new land will be expanded to fit the roller coaster. The attraction’s show building will be placed in what has been the Cast Member parking lot located behind the land.
In the image above, the roller coaster is the building closest to the bottom of the photo within the parking lot lines. You can also see just how large the building is expected to be once construction is complete.

Monsters, Inc. Show
While we await details, in November 2024, Disney also revealed that Monsters, Inc. Land will also have a new theater show.
Though it has not been confirmed as the show location, pieces of concept art have shown the former Muppet*Vision 3D Theater will be reimagined into “The Glob Theater” — a play on the famous Globe Theatre.
Monstropolis Dining
Harryhausen’s
Disney has announced that Harryhausen’s is coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. During your visit to Monstropolis, you’ll be able to dine at the iconic sushi restaurant pulled straight from Monsters, Inc.!
Disney has stated that the new land “wouldn’t be Monstropolis without a few iconic stops along the way. Places like Harryhausen’s — yes, THAT legendary restaurant monsters line up for… help bring the city to life, adding even more personality, energy, and can’t-miss moments around every corner.”
Monsters, Inc. Land Location
In November 2024, Disney confirmed the upcoming location of the new land. Monsters, Inc. land would be taking over the Grand Avenue south side of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This area was also home to Muppets Courtyard.
BUT this isn’t the end of The Muppets in Hollywood Studios. In fact, The Muppets have moved to Sunset Boulevard and taken over Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith!
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets officially opened on May 26th, 2026.
Monsters, Inc. Land Timeline
An opening timeline for Monsters, Inc. Land has not yet been announced. Construction on the new land has begun as construction walls have appeared in the area following a phased closure of the Grand Avenue area which began in May and ended on June 8th, resulting in the permanent closure of Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano, Muppet*Vision 3D, and PizzeRizzo.
And don’t you worry… if you’re feeling a teeny bit frightened about the presence of monsters in Disney’s Hollywood Studios, just remember the Monsters, Inc. motto: “We Scare Because WE CARE!”
