On its surface, Disney World’s Star Wars experience, Galactic Starcruiser, seemed like a really bold idea. The idea of a hotel where you could basically role-play all your Star Wars dreams with an actual Star Wars-based storyline could have appealed to a lot of fans.
However, less than a year after the Galactic Starcruise opened, it closed, with Disney citing that the experience didn’t perform the way the company had hoped. However, rather than leave the space abandoned, Disney decided to convert it into new office space for Walt Disney Imagineering. Now, we’ve seen signs of progress and construction to make this happen, and we recently noticed a new permit being filed for what was previously the Galactic Starcruiser.
Now, this isn’t the first permit we’ve seen filed for the former Galactic Starcruiser site, but the new permit for “general construction” shows that Disney is still working on converting the Halcyon starship into office space for Disney Imagineers. The new permit lists Balfour Beatty as the contractor, a company that is also working with Disney on the Piston Peak Cars-themed expansion in Magic Kingdom’s Frontierland. The company has also been cited in previous permits for work on the former Galactic Starcruiser.
This is just one of multiple major projects happening at Disney World right now. In addition to the Cars expansion in Magic Kingdom, a new Villains-themed land is also being built in that park, while new lands are also being built in both Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Hollywood Studios is also updating its Animation Courtyard area and converting it into The Walt Disney Studios.
We’ll be keeping an eye out for more signs of construction in Disney World and will get you updates when we have them, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
