Disney World Plans MORE Changes to Former ‘Star Wars’ Hotel

On its surface, Disney World’s Star Wars experience, Galactic Starcruiser, seemed like a really bold idea. The idea of a hotel where you could basically role-play all your Star Wars dreams with an actual Star Wars-based storyline could have appealed to a lot of fans.

However, less than a year after the Galactic Starcruise opened, it closed, with Disney citing that the experience didn’t perform the way the company had hoped. However, rather than leave the space abandoned, Disney decided to convert it into new office space for Walt Disney Imagineering. Now, we’ve seen signs of progress and construction to make this happen, and we recently noticed a new permit being filed for what was previously the Galactic Starcruiser.

We’ve covered some pretty wild Disney World news in the past several years, but one of the most bizarre and interesting events was the grand opening — followed shortly by the unceremonious closure — of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser.

This hotel was as short-lived as it was fascinating. A unique experience where you could board a Star Wars ship for yourself and live out your own adventure with characters, missions, and space food. We were lucky enough to visit it multiple times during its short reign, and that just made its closure all the more disappointing. Disney abandoned the Star Wars-themed hotel in Disney World for various reasons, primarily having to do with revenue. Many fans of the saga were disappointed they never got the opportunity to visit the ultra-immersive, cruise-like experience, while others weren’t surprised by its closing.

NEW Construction is Happening at Disney World’s Abandoned Hotel

In 2022, Disney World’s ambitious Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, which was both a hotel and a Star Wars roleplaying experience, opened for the first time.

However, the Galactic Starcruiser officially closed its doors in 2023, almost a year later. However, Disney hasn’t abandoned the building that once housed the experience — the company recently shared it would convert the building into office space for Walt Disney Imagineering. In August, Disney filed a permit to begin that conversion for “general construction.” Now, we’re starting to see signs of that construction taking place.

Some would argue it was an ahead of its time, unforgettable interactive experience that immersed users in the Star Wars universe. Others may refer to it as an overpriced boondoggle that underdelivered on its premise. What can’t be denied is that it “failed” in the sense that it closed forever just 19 months after opening.
