Who doesn’t love eating their way around World Showcase? And the cool thing is that you can get food and drinks OUTSIDE of each pavilion’s restaurants. Many of the pavilions have shops that also feature snacks and drinks from their host countries, too!
Well, one of our favorite spots to shop for such snacks is at Mitsukoshi in the Japan Pavilion. Here, you’ll find LOADS of Japanese treats, and well, we just found some new frozen treats that we HAD to try, although one was actually sweet potato-flavored. Let’s take a look at these treats, and we’ll give you our honest thoughts.
You’ll find these new frozen treats available at Mitsukoshi for $3.99 each. So let’s start with the Wafer Frozen Treats we found, including the Matcha Frozen Wafer Sandwich. We’ll admit that our thoughts are mixed on this treat. The wafer exterior is much softer than we would’ve liked. We expected some crunch, but didn’t get it. It’s like a sugar cone that’s been sitting out all day.
However, the matcha ice cream filling has a strong, earthy flavor that makes it unique, but it’s also a little bitter (and, well, matcha is generally an acquired taste, to begin with). There is a thin chocolate coating inside the wafer that helps sweeten it up, but it’s not spread very evenly, so you don’t get it in every bite.
Next up, we tried the Strawberry Frozen Wafer Sandwich. Now, this one was an instant hit with us and is probably our favorite of all the ice cream sandwiches we tried. The strawberry flavor comes through really well. However, the wafer texture was still a little too soft for our liking.
This one also melted pretty quickly, so if you get it, you’ll want to eat it fast.
The Vanilla Frozen Wafer Sandwich is probably our second favorite of these treats. You’ve got a nice vanilla flavor that even kids will like. We also thought the chocolate coating on this one was better distributed, so you also got a bit of that in each bite. This wafer lasted longer than the others…for some reason, it didn’t melt as fast.
Overall, we think this is the treat to get here if you’ve got picky eaters in your group. This one is a kid-pleaser.
Finally, we tried the Sweet Potato Frozen Wafer Sandwich. Now, this one was a little different from the others. The wafer had very little flavor and was way too chewy. It was less like a crunchy wafer and more like something else. The sweet potato flavor is very plain and earthy, like a baked sweet potato without any additional butter or sweetness. This was a sort of savory frozen treat. Even the small bits of chocolate coating on the inside didn’t help balance out that flavor.
This one also melted faster than the others…it was already turning into goo by the time we opened it. This texture made it really difficult to eat as a handheld treat. It was more like soup, and the filling pretty much separated from the wafer.
We’ll be trying even MORE new snacks in Disney World, so stay tuned to DFB for more.
