We’ve been enjoying our preview of the Disney Destiny, the newest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet. We’ve seen heroes and villains, and we’ve enjoyed EVERY minute of it.
Well, one of the lounges on the ship takes you inside Doctor Strange’s sanctum. So come with us as we visit The Sanctum to learn more about the mystical arts (and have a drink or two in the process).
Atmosphere
The Sanctum is based on Doctor Strange, so the entire lounge has a whole mystical vibe going on. You’ll spot a lot of details that might look familiar from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Doctor Strange movies.
We also love that there are a lot of different types of seating in the lounge. You’ll find large booths…
…smaller tables with comfy chairs…
…and a few seating areas that are tucked away for ultimate privacy in case you need to discuss some private mystical arts research you’ve been working on. This lounge really FEELS like a place to lounge.
Before you take a seat, though, be sure to look around at all the details. You’ll spot quite a few Marvel Easter eggs.
You’ll certainly feel like you’ve stepped into Doctor Strange’s world. The place is littered with magical artifacts that Doctor Strange has collected over the years.
You’ll even find some mystical arts-related details on the carpet.
You might notice quickly that The Sanctum is more than just a lounge. You might also catch some tableside performances by mixology sorcerers.
But enough about the lounge — what’s on the menu here?!
Menu
The menu features food and drinks inspired by the mystical arts.
You’ll be able to drink a variety of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, including mocktails, spirits, and coffee. You’ll also find a few snacks on the menu (including waffles).
And now, onto the main event — the food!
Eats
We weren’t really here to check out the food, but we had to try the Mystic Waffles with Custard or Mixed Berry, served with Maple Syrup or Hazelnut Spread for $5. It is a tiny portion, but for that price, what do you expect? The waffle itself was fresh (and it’s served warm, so you can tell they’re making them to order). It was crispy, moist, and comforting. The custard wasn’t overpowering, and it was so creamy that it melted in the mouth.
We had previously tried the Mixed Berry option, but we think the custard version is even better. Now, we wouldn’t go out of our way to get this, as you can get so much food that’s already included with the price of the cruise. But if you want a fun dessert or need a snack while enjoying drinks in The Sanctum, it’s a good option for that.
Drinks
To drink, we ordered the Infinite Bubbles, made with Empress Gin, and Crème de Violette Joto, The Citrus One Sake for $17. This drink packs a PUNCH. Like that first sip makes you feel like you’re being sucked through a portal to an alternate universe. The main flavor is the gin, which is slightly floral, although the sake adds a touch of sweetness. You also get a subtle black cherry flavor after a few sips, but this drink is basically a one-note mystic spell.
The Vapors of Valtor (you have to love these drink names, right?) is made with Grey Goose Altus, Butterfly Pea Lemon, and Fever Tree Ginger Beer for $25. This drink SCREAMS butterfly pea. It’s very floral, but then you get some acidity from the lemon. It’s light and sweet. The ginger beer adds just a touch of flavor. We would say it’s sort of like drinking a garden, so if that’s your thing, this one’s for you.
The Mirror Dimension is made with Stoli Elit, Lychee, Strawberry Pink Peppercorn, and Fever Tree Lime & Yuzu for $22. This was a well-balanced drink with a nice sweetness from the lychee and yuzu. It’s also very interesting to look at. The Stoli Elit comes in at the back end with each sip, so you get that nice vodka flavor. It’s not a drink we’d go out of our way for, but if you don’t like super-sweet drinks, it’s a good option.
It also comes in a glass that reacts to your touch, sort of like those lightning balls at the science museum. SO cool.
The Distortion Effect is made with Angel’s Envy Single Barrel High Seas Edition, and Lillet Rouge Bitters for $25. This is like an old fashioned, if the old fashioned had even more whiskey in it. It’s a LOT of whiskey, y’all. It tastes pretty much like you’re drinking whiskey straight. We’re also shocked at how big this drink is. We’ll be seeing multiverse portals for sure after knocking one or two of these back. But, yeah, if you love whiskey, this is your drink.
Next up was the Eye Opener, which is made with Saigon Baigur, Lemon, Smoked Oolong Tea, and Amaro Montenegro for $15. It’s VERY unique, but not a favorite of ours. It’s simple, too, but the taste was…a lot. It kinda’ has a breakfasty thing going on because it’s savory and robust, thanks to the tea, which is the most forward flavor. It’s served in two glasses, but the server explained that you can enjoy it by yourself, if you want. The presentation is also cool. They bring it to the table, and the cup hooks onto the teapot, which tilts and pours. Disney really thought a lot about making these presentations seem mystical.
Next up, we tried The Incursion, with Absolut Citron, Cointreau, Aperol Lillet Blanc, and White Cranberry for $16. Yes, this is basically a Cosmopolitan, and that’s about all we have. If you love a good Cosmo, order it. Otherwise, we think there are far more interesting drinks on the menu.
We also ordered The Darkhold, with Amaro Averna, Patrón XO Cafe Agave Nectar, Milk, Salted Caramel Ethel M Chocolates for $15. Y’all. We would fight Scarlet Witch for this drink. It’s a nice dessert drink that’s served warm with a fun presentation. It comes out with a Moka pot with the drink in the top half. The server pours it out in front of you and then unscrews the bottom, where a truffle comes out. Below that is a salted caramel foam that dissolves into the drink when poured in.
It’s a nice after-dinner drink that’s sweet and easy to sip on. You can taste a bit of the alcohol, though. The truffle was also really nice. It has a thin chocolate shell, and the inside is SO creamy.
Nosh or Not
Transport yourself to The Sanctum if…
- You’re a big Marvel or Doctor Strange fan. There are so many details in this bar alone that you’ll recognize from the MCU and Marvel Comics that you could spend HOURS here just checking it all out.
- You want unique drinks with cool presentations. We’ll admit that we were wowed by some of the presentations of these drinks. You really feel like you’re watching magic happen in real time.
- You want a lounge experience that’s different. This bar definitely feels like a lounge, and it’s a pretty comfy spot to stop by and get a drink, but at the same time, it’s also like you’ve stepped into the MCU, with theming that’s top-notch.
You should skip this Disney World spot if…
- You’re not a big Doctor Strange fan. Although you may enjoy this bar on its own merits, everything here, including the drinks, is themed around the world of Doctor Strange. That may or may not be your thing.
- You’re on a budget. The drinks here aren’t exactly inexpensive, so you might want to skip if you’re on a budget.
- You want a quick drink. During our experience here, there were 12-15 tables plus the bar, but only a few servers to handle all the tables. That could change when the bar officially opens, though.
Overall
We were blown away by the theming in The Sanctum, and we picked up on a lot of details based on what we know from all the MCU movies. Die-hard Doctor Strange fans will certainly want to visit, but if you’re interested in anything Marvel, we think you would appreciate. The drinks are also well-presented (sometimes in unique ways) and well-thought-out, so we think this lounge is worth your time and money.
In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more restaurant updates from Disney World and beyond. Make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest Disney news and more!
