Aarg! If you’ve been dying to walk the plank into the new pirate-themed lounge in Magic Kingdom wearing your biggest captain’s hat and parrot, then you’re in the right place.
We recently went aboard The Beak and Barrel and experienced what it’s like to be a pirate. We dined on incredible eats, drank up the rum, and this spot truly feels like a hidden treasure. While we visited, we discovered three takeaways you should know before you hop in.
The first thing we noticed was how much fun the Cast Members were having! There were interactive elements for certain drinks, like the Siren’s Whisper, where, after bringing the drink to the table, they would say they had forgotten something and return with “mermaid tears” to add in.
Whenever they came by to check on us, they would also ask if we wanted to hear a joke. If we did, they would tell us a pirate joke, and then they would ask if we needed anything. They had little songs and bits, and we felt like this really took the experience to the next level.
Another takeaway was that we loved the food. It was well themed but still packed with flavor. At similar places like Oga’s Cantina, it feels like the food is an afterthought and that we’re really only here for the drinks and unique atmosphere. We appreciated that the effort put into the drinks, food, and atmosphere was equal.
We felt like the food was very on theme for pirates, but was still familiar enough and filled with flavors that we really enjoyed it. We thought the Island Provisions would be a fan favorite, and the Griddle Cakes are great for filling you up on your adventure. There’s even a vegetarian option for the Griddle Cakes, which we appreciated.
The final takeaway was that it was surprisingly kid-friendly. While places like Oga’s Cantina are family-friendly, we can acknowledge that there aren’t really kid-friendly menu items in terms of drinks or food. The space is also very dark, and while we’ve seen plenty of kids taking their afternoon nap there, it’s not a space built for the whole family.
While The Beak and Barrel is a darker space, it’s still bright enough to see your food and drinks, and we thought some dishes like the Griddle Cakes would be enjoyed by the whole family. The Island Provisions are also a prites versions of chips and dips, so what’s there not to like?
There are also interactive elements throughout the dining experience. Rummy the parrot comes out about every seven to eight minutes and has little bits where he speaks to the crowd. Sometimes there’s a sing-along or you’ll have to “take cover” while the ship hits the rolling waves.
You’ll hear lightning and thunder, but it only lasts for a few seconds, so we think little ones won’t be scared during it, as it’s so brief. The noise level of the restaruant is also lower so you don;t have to worry about the sounds being overwhelming.
We truly had a blast (a cannonball blast that is) at The Beak and Barrel, and we’re already planning our next visit. In the meantime, make sure you’re following Disney Food Blog for more.
