Let’s take a flight!
Don’t click out, hear us out! You might be thinking, “This isn’t an issue I have. I know when to eat.” To that, we say, you only think you know! During a trip to Hong Kong a few years ago, we were headed to the region’s Disney park. It felt like we were living life on a high. We were checking out everything the park had to offer, like the World of Frozen and the exclusive Mystic Manor attraction.

On our first day, as we ran around the park, we were busy checking out the characters, merchandise, rides, and more! We were suffering from jet lag, but we weren’t noticing the slowdowns until it all came to a screeching halt. Suddenly, we felt sick, sluggish, and had developed headaches. In our haste to enjoy the park, we never considered how the 12-hour time difference would affect our eating habits.

When we would normally be eating our meals, we were sleeping. When we would normally be sleeping, we were running around nonstop. While we knew we had changed time zones, our stomachs hadn’t quite caught up, meaning we slept through our normal hunger cues and then were too distracted while we were awake, trying to take it all in. We went almost the entire first day without eating, and it put a halt to the latter half of our day.

After that, we learned that on the first day of international travel, we have to set literal reminders to eat! As crazy as that sounds, this is a rule we live and breathe by now that we know it. Feeling sick and sluggish on the first day of our trip was not in our plans, and while it didn’t ruin the trip, it definitely wasn’t a highlight.
