What if we told you there was an eBay-like marketplace where you could purchase trips that other people can no longer use?
SpareFare is changing the travel game by matching people looking to sell nonrefundable trips at steep discounts, and according to the Wall Street Journal, it might just be the best thing travel has seen in years.
As a travel nerd and Disney expert, SpareFare sounds like a great way to score some stellar vacations for CHEAP. Founded in 2016, this marketplace pairs travelers looking to sell nonrefundable trips, flights, and hotel stays they can’t use, to those looking to travel at a bargain.
One traveler, Samina Ahmed, was able to go on an all-inclusive trip to Thailand for just $1,200 — a trip that originally cost around $4,700.
SpareFare — along with its competitors like Roomer, Plans Change, and Transfer Travel lets people buy trips from others who would otherwise see them wasted. The sites earn commission (like SpareFare’s 12%) on the transaction, but the rest goes to the seller. They avoid scams by holding funds from the seller until after the trip.
For buyers, discounts are typically anywhere between 20% and 30% off the original price. If you’re willing to wait until 48 hours before departure — you can get an even better deal. Retirees and remote workers, i.e., those with flexible schedules, are SpareFare’s core customers.
The most popular listings on the site are package holidays, with the biggest sale so far being a $46,000 two-week trip for two to Fiji’s all-inclusive Turtle Island resort. An investment manager in California bought it for a measly $33,000.
The idea of a travel resale market isn’t entirely new, but post-9/11, strict ID laws made casual transfers harder. Policies on name changes vary between carriers, so it’s best to call and check with an airline before buying a secondhand flight. Changing names can trigger alerts from software designed to flag human trafficking or money laundering.
SpareFare has been known to fully refund travelers who might run into hiccups with transfers like this.
It sounds relatively similar to how renting Disney Vacation Club points operates. Members who are unable to use their points or have already booked nonrefundable vacations can sell their points or trips to non-members looking to stay at DVC properties!
If you decide to use a service like SpareFare, make sure you double-check all the details and confirm that the trip is able to be transferred.
We’ll be on the lookout for additional travel updates you might need to know about. In the meantime, make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for the latest travel news and more!
