Big news for Marvel fans!
Marvel’s latest film was Thunderbolts, which will soon be available to stream from home, and their next one is Fantastic Four, which will release in theaters soon. We previously knew that Marvel announced that three films were on the company’s 2028 docket, but now it appears a FOURTH film has been added.
Variety has reported that Disney has added a fourth Marvel film to their 2028 slate that will release on December 15th, 2028. This means that, if Disney sticks to the current release schedule, Marvel films would release in February, May, November, and now December of that year.
It would also be an interesting move for the studio, considering Bob Iger just publicly announced that Marvel lost a little focus by making too many films. Specifically, in a recent earnings call, Iger said, “We all know that in our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more. We’ve also learned over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. And frankly, we’ve all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much.”
This tracks with what many audiences have commented on the Marvel films that have come after Avengers: Endgame. Many fans feel that the films have lost their spark and what made them special, but some have commented that they feel Thunderbolts was a step in the right direction.
After The Fantastic Four: First Steps releases in theaters in July 2025, Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Avengers: Doomsday will release in 2026, and then in 2027, an untitled project will release in July and Avengers: Secret Wars in December. So jumping from two films a year to suddenly releasing four in 2028 will be an interesting change of pace.
