If you’re traveling, there are some precautions you may take.
You’ll probably want to pack extra items in case of emergencies, and you may work extra hard in the weeks leading up to your trip to make sure you don’t get sick. But have you ever checked your hotel room for bed bugs? If you haven’t, you may want to start.
KTLA reports that two guests of a Ventura hotel recently won a major payout when they sued the hotel for having bed bugs. The Shores Inn was forced to pay the two visitors $2 million in what may be one of the largest bed bug-related lawsuit payouts to date.
Alvaro Gutierrez and Ramiro Sanchez stayed in the hotel for one night in 2020. “The bed bugs latched onto the plaintiffs while they slept, sucked their blood until they were gorged, and resisted eradication,” says the lawsuit. The plaintiffs claimed that the hotel management was aware of the bed bugs through multiple online reviews but failed to solve the problem.
Gutierrez was awarded $400,000 and Sanchez was awarded $600,000 for charges like “pain” and “disfigurement.” The jury also awarded each man $500,000 in punitive damages. The hotel is expected to appeal the decision.
If you’re worried about bed bugs in your hotel room, make sure to check when you arrive, BEFORE you lay down on the bed or place your belongings on soft surfaces. Pull back the sheets, check the corners of the mattress, and look in any small holes or crevices.
And if you find bed bugs during your search, make sure to alert hotel staff and get new accommodations! Trust us — you don’t want these bad boys to follow you home.
