Magical, luxurious… creepy?
There are many words one can use to describe Disney World’s hotels. The near-30 resorts that dot the resort’s property have themes ranging from a Polynesian resort to bygone New Orleans to a turn-of-the-19th-century Florida beach resort. However, some of them have an… unintentional theme of being downright creepy thanks to some head-scratching additions.
Jack-in-the-Box!
Walt Disney World’s group of value resorts (All-Star Movies, All-Star-Music, All-Star Sports, Pop Century, and Art of Animation) are known for their massive, oversized depictions of on-theme colorful props and characters. While most of these run the gamut from adorable (massive Disney characters across several of them) to kitschy fun (see the majority of Pop Century) to so bizarre that we love them (see the building-sized 1990s laptop complete with “go.com ” homepage… also at Pop Century) there is one we would definitely call creepy.
This massive Jack-in-the-Box at All-Star Movies looks downright menacing, like a deathtrap the Joker would spring on Batman in a classic comic book. We’re not sure what Disney was thinking with this one, but we always avoid eye contact whenever we’re at the resort!
Trader’s Sam’s Creepy Critters (and More)
Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at the Polynesian Village is one of our favorite spots at Disney World. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some elements of this bar that give us the heebie jeebies. There’s the dark, somewhat cramped atmosphere, the volcano out the faux window, the octopus tentacle, the enchanted barstools, and the zombie servers. It’s fun, but not for the faint of heart.
Nanny Chairs
Of course we couldn’t talk about creepy elements at Disney World hotels without bringing up the nanny chairs at the BoardWalk. These terrifying chairs are modeled after and cast from original 19th-century carousel chairs, which were originally intended to give nannies a much-needed rest while the children they watched rode a carousel, hence the name. Now why do they need to look like horrifying sleep-demons? That’s another question.
On top of that, the chairs – – nicknamed Todd, Paul, Alex, and Carrie after the names hand-painted on their backs (rumored to be those of the children of the imagineers who designed the chairs) – – have a tendency to move around the BoardWalk. Are they haunted or is it simply some Cast Members having some fun?
Walt Disney World’s hotels are magical across the board. However, there are definitely some creepy additions if one knows where to look. Stay tuned to DFB for further secrets of the resort.
