We Just Got a BIG 'Hocus Pocus 3' Update!

Are you ready for some big Hocus Pocus news?

Let’s just say we’re still thrilled that the Sanderson Sisters reunited for a Hocus Pocus 2, but we got even more excited when Disney announced that there would be a Hocus Pocus 3. We also learned that Anne Fletcher, who directed the second movie, will be returning to direct the third. Well, now we’ve got a NEW Hocus Pocus 3 update!

Okay, so we’re not TOO surprised that a third movie is in the works. Hocus Pocus 2 ended up setting a record for Disney+ as the most-watched premiere movie on the streamer in the U.S. So, OF COURSE, there’s going to be more, but what can we expect from the third movie?

Well, we got a bit of an update on that, thanks to the movie’s screenwriter. According to Entertainment Weekly, screenwriter Jen D’Angelo spoke a little bit about the sequel. Although the WGA strike slowed down the development of the third Hocus Pocus movie, D’Angelo is now working on the story for it and has “full idealism” about it.

“We’re still in the story phase, we’re still working on it. We’ve been working on some ideas, and it’s been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore,” D’Angelo said. However, D’Angelo also teased the potential return of a character from Hocus Pocus 2, the mother witch played by Hannah Waddingham. She said, “We’ve only scratched the surface of Hannah Waddingham’s mother witch.”

D’Angelo also spoke about Waddingham’s sorceress character seen at the beginning of Hocus Pocus 2 as being the same “mother” referenced in the original 1993 movie. She said: “I believe that she’s that mother, that she is the scorpion pie mother, and that they had a much more significant relationship with her than we’ve yet to see. But, maybe we will see.”

More Hannah Waddingham? Yes, please!

But…what about the return of the Sanderson Sisters, portrayed by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy? Given the events of Hocus Pocus 2, it might seem unlikely, and Najimy has stated that she felt like the Sisters were done but also said, “never say never.”

However, her co-star, Bette Midler, has stated that she would sign on, although she didn’t “know how.” So don’t write off the Sanderson sisters just yet. According to People, Parker has also said she’s open to it.

So the witches could fly again, although D’Angelo stressed that no storyline has been settled upon for the third movie as she continues to explore where to take the story next.

She said, “I’m hoping that we are able to explore every aspect of these stories and take these characters on a bunch of fun adventures. 3 is still very much in the early stages, we don’t really know what it is, but we’re exploring all options and I think everybody is so delighted by the reaction that Hocus Pocus 2 got, and we’re excited to continue those stories.”
