Summer 2023 has been a BIG season for movie releases!
The live-action The Little Mermaid kicked off a season filled with additions from the Fast & the Furious and Transformers franchises, as well as another film from Pixar. To round out the summer, we’ll get the highly-anticipated Barbie movie from Greta Gerwig and Disney’s new film Haunted Mansion. And if you’re really excited about that last one, we’ve got some news for you!
Disneyland Resort is set to host the Haunted Mansion premiere on July 15th, but will the possible actors’ strike affect those plans? Currently, there is potential for a SAG-AFTRA strike, but the decision has not yet been made. A strike was recommended after the deadline for union negotiations passed (it ended at 11:59PM on July 12th) and no deal had been reached.
Variety reports that Disney still plans to host the premiere, whether or not a strike is called. If a strike is called, the cast of the movie (including LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon, Daniel Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Hasan Minhaj, Marilu Henner, and Lindsay Lamb) would not be able to attend. It’s not yet clear if director Justin Simien, producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, executive producers Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman, and composer Kris Bowers would attend and participate in traditional Q&A and a walk on the red carpet.
UPDATE: During a press conference on Thursday, July 13th, SAG-AFTRA announced a strike. The SAG board unanimously voted to issue the strike order, and it will last until a labor contract is reached.
The premiere is set to take place at Disney California Adventure at the Hyperion Theater. The studio is expecting about 2000 guests, including fans in costumes. There is supposed to be a pre-reception with food and drinks.
We’ll make sure to keep you updated with any major changes for this premiere and any details about the possible actors’ strike and how it could affect film productions and events this summer. Stay tuned to DFB for the latest!
