When it comes to air travel, there’s a lot going on right now.
Flights are frequently being delayed or canceled, and the cost to fly is very high. Many airlines are choosing to reduce daily flights and stop service to certain airports altogether. Despite all of this, one airline is reporting record-high profits — but these profits come with a warning for customers.
Southwest Airlines reported a $760 million profit during its second quarter of fiscal year 2022, according to Click Orlando. This is nearly double the earnings that they reported this time last year.
However, the airline did note that it is likely that rising costs and “lowered productivity” will continue for the rest of the year. The airline is spending more than double its usual budget on fuel costs (a whopping $800 million), and spending on wages and benefits has risen by 21%. Canceled and delayed flights also contribute to increased costs for airlines.
The airline expects to add 10,000 jobs this year but will be slowing down hiring in the latter half of 2022 to help mitigate the expected 12% to 15% increase in fuel costs that could be on the horizon. With all that being said, CEO Robert Jordan said that he expects the rest of the year to be “solidly profitable” assuming there are no major surprises.
The travel industry is struggling to cope with the increased number of travelers that has been seen over the past few months. Gas prices have fluctuated and airports are seeing an increased number of travelers pass through daily as a result. If you’re looking to save some money on your travels, the best advice is to book your tickets as far in advance as possible to get the best price.
And with gas prices starting to trend downwards, you might want to consider driving to Disney World or your next vacation destination instead of flying, if you can, especially considering that the Orlando International Airport ranks in the top 10 airports for flight delays in the United States.
If you’re planning on traveling internationally soon, you should be prepared for the unexpected passport problem currently facing travelers, and you should also check out the six new travel destinations that have been added to the CDC’s “high risk” list. We’ll be keeping an eye on the travel industry as summer winds down, so make sure to stay tuned to DFB for all the latest news and updates!
