Disney+ is changing soon in a big way, and it involves ads.
Not long ago we reported that Disney+ would be introducing an ad-supported subscription later in 2022, with a separate subscription option for people willing to pay more for no ads, and recently we learned a few details about what those ads might be like. Disney also announced just how many ads you may be watching if you opt for this future subscription, so find out whether this could be a dealbreaker for you.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the ad-supported subscription will include approximately four minutes of ads per hour, and there will be no ads directed to preschool children. In fact, preschoolers will not see any ads when using the child profile, even with the ad-supported subscription.
Four minutes of ads per hour might seem like a lot, but it’s actually far shorter than most of Disney+’s competitors. Hulu, which is controlled by Disney, shows ads for almost eight minutes per hour on their ad-supported subscription, and Peacock airs around five minutes of commercials per hour. If you’re watching traditional TV, you’re looking at an average of 18 to 23 minutes of ads per hour.
According to the Wall Street Journal, “Disney+ is seeking to charge advertisers about $50 to $60 for reaching 1,000 viewers.” This is considered a pricey ask, especially considering brands will not be able to request when to have their ads appear or in which program.
The streaming industry is an ideal place for advertisers to target 25- to 30-year-olds and Disney+ is considered a safe place for brands that are concerned about appearing alongside controversial content.
The ads on Disney+ will not include alcohol or political content at its launch, and they will also not be including any ads from competitors or rival entertainment studios.
Netflix has also recently shared plans to add a new ad-supported subscription in late 2022, so Disney+ will not be alone in adding this new price tier. Currently, a Disney+ subscription (without ads) costs $7.99 a month, but Disney has not yet released news about the pricing for the future ad-supported subscription.
