Disney has a knack for whipping up some DELICIOUS comfort foods!
Whether it’s classic grilled cheese and tomato soup, decadent mac and cheese creations, or just-like-mom-used-to-make meatloaf that takes you to your happy place, Disney has got you covered. And, since two comfort foods is (theoretically) better than one, Disney is giving us the chance to make one of their…weirder creations at home!
Like mac and cheese? Good. Like PB&J sandwiches? Perfect! Ever thought about combining the two? No? Well, it’s time to consider it! The Peanut Butter & Jelly Mac has been making people scratch their heads at the Nuts About Cheese booth at Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival this year, and if that sounds kinda crazy to you, you’re not alone! If you’re feeling adventurous, though, this dish is DEFINITELY one to try. We gave it a try ourselves at the festival back in March, and you can now make your own at home with this just-released recipe — after all, we did say that it’s something that everyone should try at least once!
While you can only sample this comfort food concoction at the festival through April 26th, you can now throw it together for your comfort-food-loving friends and family anytime! The dish features a brown sugar streusel topping and a strawberry crackle accent, plus a savory peanut butter sauce that reminded us of a pad Thai peanut sauce. So, if this unique comfort food mélange sounds like something you’d like to try, here’s what you’re going to need!
Ingredients
Macaroni
- 1 pound dried elbow macaroni
- 1 tablespoon canola oil
Strawberry Crumble
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 4 tablespoons butter, melted
- 3 tablespoons strawberry jelly
Strawberry Sauce
- 1/2 cup strawberry jelly
Peanut Butter Sauce
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 4 cups heavy cream
- 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter
- Coarse salt, to taste
Topping
- 1 packet strawberry-flavored popping candies
Once you have your ingredients ready to go, the recipe is fairly straightforward. Let’s dig in!
Directions
You’ll start this recipe by preparing the pasta as you normally would, then move on to the PB&J-themed sauces and toppings.
For the macaroni:
- Cook macaroni according to package instructions. Drain and toss with canola oil to prevent sticking.
- Set aside.
For the strawberry crumble:
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper; set aside.
- Combine flour, brown sugar and salt in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment on low speed until combined.
- Add melted butter and strawberry and mix on medium speed until crumbly.
- Place on reserved sheet pan and bake for 6-8 minutes, until crumble begins to brown.
- Set aside.
For the strawberry cause:
- Heat strawberry jelly in a medium saucepan over low heat for 5 minutes, until jelly is easily poured.
- Keep warm until ready to serve.
For the peanut butter sauce:
- Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add flour and whisk for 2 minutes. Add heavy cream and stir constantly until heavy cream is 175°F.
- Remove from heat and stir in peanut butter. Season with salt, to taste.
- Keep warm until ready to serve.
To serve:
- Stir reserved macaroni into peanut butter sauce. Evenly divide among 4-6 plates and top with strawberry crumble and strawberry sauce. Sprinkle strawberry-flavored popping candies on top.
