Ever since it first opened in December of 2019, Rise of the Resistance in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has been arguably the most popular ride in Disney World!
The ride typically loads guests using a boarding group system where guests are required to open the My Disney Experience app and secure a pass at 7AM or 1PM if they wish to ride. This system has seen its changes in the last two years, but it has been the only way for guests to experience the attraction…that is, until yesterday.
Heading into the second half of August, crowd levels and wait times have dipped dramatically as many people return to school and hardcore Disney fans wait to visit until the 50th Anniversary celebrations begin. So yesterday afternoon when the 1PM boarding group drop happened, the passes didn’t all disappear within seconds like they usually do.
Instead, boarding groups were available to be secured well into the evening. And according to theme park reporter Scott Gustin, guests were even able to join the STANDBY line after 7PM! That marks the first time that guests have been able to just wait in line for Rise of the Resistance in the ride’s history.
another update – after 7pm, guests WITHOUT BOARDING GROUPS were allowed to ride. As of 830pm, Rise was a walk on.

So could it happen again? It’s possible, but only if you’re visiting during an incredibly slow time. We still recommend trying to secure a boarding group because this is a very rare circumstance. (It took nearly two years for it to happen ONCE.)
We’ll be on the lookout to see if this happens again, so stay tuned to DFB. We’ve got the latest updates on crowds in Disney World so that you know exactly what the parks are like!
