There have been so many exciting updates about the Disney Wish in recent weeks and months, from the variety of unique dining options on board to of course the Aqua Mouse coaster.
With all of these announcements, we often forget that the ship is still under construction! The latest ship to be added to the Disney Cruise Line fleet is currently located at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, where crews are hard at work bringing all of the magic to life.
Philip Gennotte, Portfolio Project Management Executive for Walt Disney Imagineering Germany just shared some photos along with a progress report on two key milestones when building a cruise ship!
The first update is the construction of the Wheelhouse, also known as the ship’s bridge, which is nearing completion! This is the area where the captain and officers command the ship (so, it’s kind of a really important part of the ship!). As Philip Gennotte puts it, “this block will truly give the Disney Wish an identity. I would even go as far as saying that it gives our ship a face!”
The other important section of the ship that is nearing completion is the ship’s Bow! The Bow is where guests will spot the medallion and filigree featuring Captain Minnie. The Bow is one of nearly 100 “blocks” that are used to piece the ship together, almost like a giant puzzle. According to Gennotte, there are currently just over 30 blocks left to be installed.
It was quite the feat to add the Bow, which alone weighs 500 metric tons. Gennotte added that “the entire process of lifting, installing and fully welding the bow block, while being suspended from the overhead gantry crane, took just under 10 hours.”
We cannot wait to see the Disney Wish as a finished product, but it’s incredible to get a glimpse behind-the-scenes and see it come together piece by piece! Be sure to follow along in the months to come as we count down the days to the Disney Wish’s maiden voyage in June of 2022!
