EPCOT might be getting a little bit snazzier at night soon!
Last month, Walt Disney Imagineers announced that EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth will be getting a new programmable lighting design. Now, we’ve learned a little more about the new lights — and work could be starting soon!
Walt Disney Imagineering filed TWO permits coded to the Spaceship Earth address, both of which detail work on lighting equipment.
The first was filed with Pro Sound and Video, a firm that does show lights, and notes the installation of “lighting controls, equipment, and low voltage terminations.”
This seems like it could be the installation of the new light kit for Spaceship Earth! Disney hasn’t released specifics on what all the new lighting will entail, but it might give the geodesic sphere a more dynamic look, like Tree of Life or Cinderella Castle, instead of the static current color scheme.
The second permit filed to the address is for the “installation of lighting supports” from InterAmerica Stage, Inc. This company has been seen on several structural and set permits for other Disney projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.
Imagineers also filed a permit with the company widely behind work on Future World’s transformation for the EPCOT Transformation, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. This one is an amended permit, extending Future World site work, demolition, hardscaping, and landscaping.
The expiration on the initial permit was August 30th, 2020. The amended date is very faded, but it looks like it MIGHT say “December 30, 2022.” This could mean a delay of progress due to the global health crisis and/or it might be referencing a new phase in the work.
We’ll be keeping a close eye out for more permits and for work IN the park, so stay tuned to DFB for the latest updates!
