After the Disney parks in the U.S. closed last month, Disney announced furloughs across the company of both non-union and unionized workers.
Earlier today, we got word that some of the furloughed employees have staged at-home protests against Florida’s unemployment system.
The state’s economy has been hit hard by the closures of several theme parks and tourist areas and furloughed employees are now seeking support from the state’s unemployment office. Unfortunately, the electronic system has been unable to process the flood of unemployment requests.
According to ClickOrlando, Governor Ron DeSantis is considering the idea of working with “theme parks and other large employers” to compile data on furloughed employees and input the information directly into the system when the site has lower traffic. If this new system were enacted, it would not affect applicants’ positions in line, but would simply help ensure their applications are received.
He noted several residents have successfully filed for unemployment already and may start seeing federal unemployment checks as early as Tuesday. DeSantis did not mention Disney specifically, but we will keep you posted as we learn more!
