I Won a runDisney Race – Here's What You Actually Get

Yes, I voluntarily wake up at 2:30 AM to race throughout Disney World, and yes, I know I’m a problem.

It may not be everyone’s dream to participate in runDisney, which lets you sign up and race in Disney World before the parks open and get medals and meet characters, and yes, the early alarm clock is the absolute worst part, but for me, it’s a chance to compete against other racers and win an award or two. While a majority of people are not actually competing and are just enjoying being in the parks before they open and checking out some rare character meet and greets (and have a blast doing it), others train to place in the top three, and during runDisney 2026 Springtime Surprise Weekend, I placed in all three races — let’s talk about it.

Springtime Surprise Weekend has three races, and in 2026, they were themed to the best duos, including:

Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde for the 5k
Winnie the Pooh and Tigger for the 10k
Joy and Sadness for the 10 miler
Aladdin and Genie for the challenge (which is all three of the other races!)

That means the medals, t-shirts, and running bibs are themed to the different characters. This was my first time completing the challenger, which involves three days of racing and a total of 19.3 miles across all races, so you can bet that by the third day, waking up super early and racing, I was beat. It’s definitely a marathon, not a sprint (well, wait, that’s the Dopey Challenge, which does include a full marathon).

I compete in the Women’s Pushrim Wheelchair category. Since wheels generally go faster than legs, we start before all the runners. We get about two minutes before the elite runners start, and let me tell you, they are FAST. Each athlete’s time doesn’t start until they cross the start line, so it isn’t really a head start since it’s based on the individual.

I had the absolute pleasure of winning 1st place in the Zootopia-themed 5k! I got to roll under a banner, and Goofy was there at the end, waving me in. Normally, there’s confetti as well, but I didn’t slow down enough for them to start it because I was too excited about my time and the fact that I WAS ACTUALLY WINNING A RACE!!!

They take about a million photos of you from every single angle ever, and yes, I am turning off my watch because it matters, y’all. Over the next two days, I placed 2nd in the 10k and 3rd in the 10 miler.

Now, besides a banner, confetti, and an insane amount of bragging rights, what do you actually get for winning a runDisney race? Well, the truth is, not much. It does depend on the race, but we can chat about Springtime Surprise, since it’s my favorite of all the race weekends (it’s the only one with random characters vs strict themed ones like Marathon Weekend and Princess Half Marathon Weekend, and it’s the only one with a 10 miler race).

The biggest prize is the plaques. Along with your medal, which everyone gets when they complete the race, you get a plaque with your division and place on it. But wait…where’s my 1st place plaque?

Well, believe it or not, the 5k isn’t timed (except during Marathon Weekend, which is just to make sure you finish if you’re completing the Dopey Challenge). Normally, for awards, it’s based on the chip time, which is on your bib. Technically, someone could start minutes behind you and still run faster, but they keep all the elite athletes together, so it’s pretty infrequent for this to happen.

Why did I get to go through a banner and be deemed first place if it’s not really timed? I truly have no idea, but you do get plaques for being in the top three for the other distances since they’re officially timed. I also got a new personal record, which rocks. If you’re the winner of the largest distance of the weekend, which, for Springtime, is the 10 miler, you also get your photo on the runDisney Instagram account, which is pretty cool in my opinion.

These races can be hard to sign up for, so if it’s something you’re interested in trying, you’ll want to make sure you’re on early to register. The Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend and Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend are already full for the 2026-2027 season, but registration for the Princess Half Marathon, along with next year’s Springtime Surprise Weekend, should be coming up within the next few months (yep, you sign up about nine months in advance).
