We’ve got some massive news out of the airline industry that will absolutely affect future travel, even if you weren’t planning on flying with this airline directly.
This morning, it was officially announced that Spirit Airlines is shutting down. The airline has now canceled all flights and has advised Spirit passengers not to go to the airport. What does that mean for upcoming travel? Let’s break it all down.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, shortly after 2:30 AM ET on Saturday, May 2nd, a statement was distributed by Spirit Aviation Holdings, Inc. informing passengers that they “regretfully” made the decision to cancel all flights and end operations immediately. The final Spirit flight landed in Dallas, Texas, from Detroit, Michigan, and on its final day of operations as a whole, the airline flew 50,000 passengers safely around the country. Now, the company is working on transporting 1,300 of its employees home.
As of 4 AM on Saturday, all 277 of Spirit’s flights were canceled across all airports, with 85 of them out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Since August 2025, the airline had been under Chapter 11 protection of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, and it turned to the federal government for additional assistance, but no agreement could be reached.
To assist passengers who are now without flights, Southwest Airlines has stepped in and made a statement about helping passengers get where they need to go. The statement reads, “Customers holding Spirit reservations may only access special Southwest fares at Southwest ticket counters at their departure airport for eligible routes through 11:59 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, May 6.” If you’re traveling 1-500 miles, it’ll cost $200, 501-1,000 miles will cost $300, and 1,000+ miles will cost $400.
If you’ve got a flight coming up that’s now been canceled, Spirit is directing you to https://spiritrestructuring.com to see what your options are. Their statement says, “To our Guests: all flights have been canceled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.” Don’t worry, you will be getting your money back in the form of a refund. Spirit’s website says they will “automatically process refunds for any flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original form of payment.”
We’ll continue to update you more about this situation as it develops, so be sure to stay tuned to DFB.
