Stardust Racers is one of Epic Universe’s most popular attractions. The dual-launch roller coaster has riders racing against the opposite track in one of Universal Orlando’s fastest rides.
The roller coaster closed for annual refurbishment on February 19th, but the closure has been extended from late February to mid-March, and now until April 5th!
Stardust Racers closed on February 19th for its first annual inspection. Universal will also perform maintenance work and additional capacity enhancements for the queue and ride throughput. The ride is expected to be up and running by April 5th based on the calendar, but Universal has not yet confirmed an opening date.
In January, during Florida’s unprecedented cold front, Stardust Racers closed for several days. The trains would valley during testing, where ride vehicles lose more momentum than usual, making them unable to complete circuits and stall in low points of the track. The carts would also get stuck due to abnormally high winds, and Universal had to use a crane to recover the ride vehicles.
Stardust Racers was also closed back in September, when a rider, Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, was found unresponsive on the ride. Zavala died due to multiple blunt impact injuries, and the manner of death was ruled an accident. Universal now requires wheelchair users to be able to walk independently to any of their thrill rides, and Team Members will no longer be able to assist them on the attraction.
While Universal has taken precautions after mishaps, many guests are still concerned about ride safety. A viral lawsuit went public last month, where twin brothers sued Universal Orlando Resort for injuries from Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. They allege that Universal knowingly let the brothers ride a malfunctioning ride.
We’ll be following the Stardust Racers reopening. Stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for more theme park news!
