Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry is a wildly popular attraction at Epic Universe. The ride takes you through the Ministry of Magic with magical, omnidirectional lifts that can propel you forwards, backwards, up, down, or sideways.
The ride is an engineering feat and received critical acclaim – but the guest experience tells a different story. It often breaks down, and guests have reported being stuck for hours or even being injured during these malfunctions.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, twin brothers Derrick Burrough of Tennessee and Erick Burrough of Georgia are suing Universal Orlando Resort for injuries from Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry. They were riding the ride on Christmas Day last year when the ride suddenly stopped, and they were “thrusted erratically” in their seats, sustaining “significant” injuries to their necks and backs, according to the lawsuits.
They suffered “disability, physical impairment, disfigurement, mental anguish and inconvenience; expense of hospitalization, medical and nursing care and treatment; and past lost wages, loss of earning power and diminished earning capacity,” according to their Morgan & Morgan lawsuits.
“The most important job of a theme park is to keep its guests safe. Instead, Universal allegedly operated a ride that had been plagued by repeated malfunctions, glitches, and hard stops since it opened,” attorney John Morgan said in the release. “Our clients continue to seek treatment for their injuries, which are impacting their everyday lives. They have filed these lawsuits to hold Universal accountable for a safety incident we allege was entirely preventable.”
The Morgan & Morgan press release alleged that Universal knowingly let the brother ride a malfunctioning ride. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry has had several shutdowns since opening last spring, causing other injury suits.
These lawsuits against Epic Universe rides have guests seriously questioning the safety of these attractions. Stay tuned to Disney Food Blog for more theme park news.
