There are lots of parts of EPCOT we absolutely adore, but when we’re feeling a little overwhelmed and need a breather, we 100% find ourselves heading straight for The Living Seas.
This is the pavilion where you’ll find The Seas with Nemo and Friends and the SeaBase aquarium right at the exit to the ride, which also houses Turtle Talk with Crush. Lots of people don’t know EPCOT houses such a MASSIVE aquarium with all different kinds of sea life, but it’s one of our favorite spots. Did you know this year it’s celebrating a very special milestone? This year, The Living Seas is celebrating its 40th Anniversary!
This pavilion opened in 1986, four years after EPCOT itself opened, and it was originally home to The Living Seas attraction and the aquarium. It was home to the largest saltwater tank in the world upon opening, holding 5.7 million US gallons, but was surpassed by the Georgia Aquarium in 2005.
In 2003, Disney began retheming the pavilion to Finding Nemo, but The Living Seas itself didn’t close to become The Seas with Nemo and Friends until 2005. The pavilion was fully reopened, entirely themed to the film in late 2005, and has stayed essentially the same ever since.
On his Instagram account, Dr. Mark, Vice President at Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, shared this 40th Anniversary celebration, and encourages us all to keep an eye on his account this month as the milestone is celebrated. Who knows what we may see happen!
