NEW Update on Universal’s First UK Theme Park

It’s time — the Universal theme park in the UK is one step closer to officially starting construction.

It was just announced that the UK Government has officially approved permission for Universal to plan for a Universal Destinations and Experiences theme park and resort in Bedford! Let’s take a look at the details that we know.

Not too long ago, Universal Destinations & Experiences submitted a request to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government for planning permission through a Special Development Order.

After years of close collaboration between Universal, councillors, and council staff, the theme park planned for Bedford in the UK has taken a big step forward. The UK Government has officially approved the request for planning permission by a Social Development Order. The Universal theme park is planned to open in the United Kingdom in 2031.

It’s said that this park in Bedford will be a “world-class theme park with several themed lands, visitor accommodation, as well as a range of retail, dining, and entertainment uses.” On top of that, it will be one of the largest employers in the region, creating around 20,000 jobs during the period of construction alone.

The mayor of Bedford Borough, Tom Wooten, said, “I’d love to take all the credit for this — but I can’t! This is the result of so much hard work by so many people, and it will be something that has a huge, positive impact on countless lives even when I’m long forgotten. It’s one of the proudest moments of my political life.”

They also believe it will make a £50 billion economic benefit for Bedford and the UK economy. Bedford Borough Council chief executive Laura Church said, “This truly puts Bedford on the map, as a global destination for tourism, creativity, and innovation for generations to come.”
