Disney is making a live-action Gaston movie — and yes, this is real.

In recent years, the studio has found its groove revisiting beloved animated classics through live-action adaptations, reintroducing familiar stories and characters to a whole new generation. Now, Disney is taking that formula a step further by putting the spotlight on one of its most iconic villains. While details are still limited, a Gaston-focused film is officially in development, and here’s what we know so far about this unexpected new chapter.

Disney is once again digging into its animated vault, and this time, one of its most infamous villains is getting his own spotlight. According to Deadline, the studio has officially announced that it’s developing a live-action feature film centered around Gaston, the swaggering, self-adored antagonist from Beauty and the Beast.

The upcoming movie is currently in early development, with screenplay drafts underway and key creative talent already attached. Dave Callaham, known for writing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is working on the latest script. Michelle Rejwan — a producer with impressive credits to her name, including Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — is reported to produce the upcoming project.

Gaston’s Fountain

Though plot details are being kept under wraps, the goal could be to keep giving audiences a deeper look at Gaston’s world and perspective. Disney has seen success with villain-focused projects in the past, such as Maleficent and Cruella, which reimagined classic antagonists with more complex or sympathetic storytelling. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Gaston’s story leans into a similar re-examination of a character traditionally known for his bravado and narcissism.

While Beauty and the Beast fans remember Gaston in both his animated and live-action versions of the character for his bombastic swagger and over-the-top musical number, a full film could explore what makes him tick, beyond the hunting lodge and the tavern cheers of the village.
