I love me a good pickle. Straight out of the jar? Yep. In corn dog form? Uh-huh. Pickle martini? I’ve had a few. So, I was pretty darn excited when McDonald’s announced that McShaker fries were finally coming to the U.S. — and that they’d be pickle-flavored.
In case you’re unfamiliar, shaker fries — or shake shake fries, as they’re sometimes called — are hugely popular in Asia, Europe, and Australia. Essentially, they’re French fries served with a separate seasoning packet that you shake onto your fries and then shake it all up in a bag. And pickled flavored ones?! Count me in. So, color me surprised when I, in fact, did not love the new McDonald’s shaker fries!
The fries are served with dill pickle seasoning in a packet on the side, and customers can toss the fries and seasoning together in a McShaker bag to create the final product. They’re part of McDonald’s Grinch Meal, which includes:
- Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets
- Dill Pickle “Grinch Salt” McShaker Fries
- A Medium Drink
- A pair of Grinch and McDonald’s themed socks (available in red, blue, yellow, and green)
The Grinch meals have proven to be quite popular, so they may be sold out at your local McDonald’s. But if you ask me, that might be a good thing. While I love pickles — and I did love the experience of shaking them in the bag (what can I say? I like a little whimsy in my life) — I did not love the seasoning.
It’s not that I hated the seasoning, it was…fine. But it tasted strongly of citric acid to me, and it was a bit much the more fries I ate. I actually preferred the fries with the least amount of seasoning on them.
Maybe it was user error, and the secret is to be conservative with the seasoning packet — don’t just dump the whole thing in the bag all willy-nilly like I did. If there had been a little less of the citric acid flavor, perhaps I would be singing a different tune. But, alas, here I am, shouting into the pickle void.

Our McDonald’s also sells the shaker fries separately. My older son ordered them. They smelled much stronger than they tasted.
I love Mcdonalds Fries
Interesting. I would try it, but their mobile ordering by phone is terrible so I avoid McD’s. I do not know why they have to make it so difficult.
The Grinch fruit pie is good though, despite the green pastry which makes it look mouldy. If you can get past that, it’s very nice.
